This is precisely what I do -- I run straight into my Axe III, instrument level out into my Friedman Plex into Fractal load box, line level back into Axe III into FRFR monitors. The stomps in the Axe are so close to the real thing I don't even notice. And the post FX are world class.
Never heard this before, but regardless its well documented that EBMM didn't have the infrastructure to keep up with demand. Ed was already with PV and they offered to make his guitars as well.
I couldn't care less if he used either...FWIW the H949 came out in 1977, so he probably was using it for Fair Warning. And hell yes, the 949 is awesome.

Make sure you download the Fractal edit software...this is a must! Everything is super intuitive and gives you immediate ability to tweak as necessary without breaking your back.
I run 4CM with my FM3 and Friedman Plex. YMMV, but I don't miss my analog pedals at all. Phaser, Flanger, Echoplex, Tremolo, Univibe in particular are so close I don't even notice.
