I've got one of these so went and looked at it..
The first three digits on mine are 96S..that adds up since these came out in 1996 and the S undoubtedly stands for "Slash".
As noted by others the number between the 4 and 9 is somewhat blurred out but I do think its a 6..
So I'm seeing: 96S146917
