Yeah, he is being honest about it here. The input stage is just taking your low impedance guitar signal and amplifying to prepare it for the rest of the preamp...which includes gain staging and tone shaping and all the juicy stuff most of us like. It's a small part of the preamp...well depending...
Funnily enough, Mesas are where I've had reliability issues, too. Had to send a Mark IVa back to Mesa twice within 3 months for repairs after a local shop couldn't fix it after 10 weeks. Weird switching problems with other Mesas. Too much djanky shit going on inside those things lol.
I've owned a TON of these over the years. My current 50 watter is from the original run without the concentric pots. My 100S has been around for a while, too. No issues aside from your standard tube problems.
I've had a 5153 100S for something like 5 years now. It's my all time favorite amp. I don't like the JCM800 at all. I don't like boosting because it ruins the response for me, and even with a boost it doesn't get as gainy as I want. Haven't tried an MT100 yet, but I've been watching a few on...
Well, that's not QUITE what he said. He said there is a section in the front of the preamp in those initial rectos that he took from Mike's amp and he wanted to change that section of the preamp, but everyone else at Mesa told him not to because it sounded great. And then proceeds to thank Mike...
I’ve spent $4500 and felt that was too much. Anything above $3k doesn’t really get you a better guitar or higher quality. There’s a point of diminishing returns and I’ve been able to find what I want at $3k and under. But I wouldn’t be opposed to spending more, just depends on the guitar.
Lots of reasons not related to the tones that I had to let it go. My wife has been out of real work for the better part of 2 years, now, and the EVH 100S is still my favorite amp of all time, so most other gear had to go.
Nice!
Sitting and playing a V puts the bridge a more ideal position, I think. When I play strats for too long, my right shoulder starts to wear out. But not so with Vs.
Here is my current collection.
If you still want that Engl sound...Listening back to this makes me wonder why I didn't keep it, honestly haha. I bet paired with a 2902 would sound incredible, too. I did try it with a Powerstation, and I agree that it is just too transparent for this purpose. It sounds good but is missing...
Yeah, I agree. I ran the 2cP module through the Mark VII (same day we were running the PB2 module through my other guitar players Powerball 2), and while I could hear some slight differences, he couldn't. Extremely, extremely close.
That's funny because I did not like the actual Savage amp, but the Powerball 2 is the best thing Engl makes, IMO. I am curious about the Savage module, but of the ones I tried (Uber, PB2, 2cP, UL, 6505), the PB2 was my favorite, with the Uber coming in a pretty close second.
I think a Syn-2 and...
I’d do this trade. Sell the e530. Grab a synergy rack unit and a savage module. Then you get the best of both worlds. Won’t be exactly like the savage but the synergy stuff gets EXTREMELY close. Running the powerball module into an actual powerball 2 and switching between the amp and synergy, I...
I don't have any K100s these days. Been a while for those.
Appreciate the kind words! The Bauers are siiiiiick guitars. I have 3 lol. The Strat is my main one, but I also have my original custom flying V from him and a custom koa topped V with a Dime headstock and Floyd.
Old pic, but the only...
