It was a thing that evolved over the years. The explanation that I read (20ish years ago when I bought them) was that over the years, the carving/duplicator "machine" Gibson used wore down and so instead of getting the nice carve that started in the 50s, by the late 70s it was just an simple...
It isn't really so much of a dish carve (where it sort of bubbles up in the middle, inside of the burst edges) as it is just an overall roundness from edge to edge. It's hard to describe and I'm not sure I've ever caught a good photo of it.
Yes. These are different than your 71, I'm sure, but there is something about these two (and their 78 Standard brother) that feel great. I think it's the carve more than the thickness, necessarily.
Also, put me down as pro-volute. My ESPs have them, too.
I just remember all the "meh" from the internets in the early 2000s when people talked about the Norlin guitars. Now they're reissuing them and people are loving them. :ROFLMAO:
I think the Eclipse retains a lot of what a Les Paul is. I have Les Pauls, regular Eclipses and Full Thickness (LP width) Eclipses. I prefer the regular Eclipses, but the FT guitars do get closer to the Gibson. To my ears, there is a little more lower-mids, which makes it feel a tad beefier.
Congrats, McTallica! Sorry for the delayed reply to this thread, but even with 2-factor, the forum wasn't letting me post here. I have 5 guitars from Rob and they're all great. He shared a few of the build process pics of this guitar with me as he was going and kept saying how resonant it was...
Thanks! I built it based both on my needs for space. I took the concept from the DRS double-tier stand and adapted it. Mostly because I didn't want to spend a ton of cash on two of his racks (I mean, that leaves more money for guitars, right?) and also because I wanted something to hang the...

Here's the same builder's licensed KL. It looks like the guy does pretty nice work, but his personality is a bit abrasive. There's no way I'd pay that price for a guitar from him, even if he were the nicest guy...
One thing to consider is that the ESP and the E-II guitars will have a maple cap on the mahogany body. The E-II (formerly ESP Standard Series) with fancy wood tops are a veneer over maple top. The LTD guitars are just a veneer over the mahogany. That may have changed, but my 2003 LTD did not...
I've owned three, ESP Standard Series FT Eclipses (still own two of them.) Two were from 2007, the third 2010. They weighed in at 8lbs 15oz, 8lbs 14oz, and 8lbs 10oz
I know a thing or two about Eclipses. They're everything you're looking for. My average Eclipse weighs in slightly below 8lbs. Even the "full thickness" (Les Paul thickness) guitars are under 9.
The regular thickness Eclipses I have retain a fair amount of what a Les Paul does. With the same...
Not included in the video is this 2012 FT Eclipse. It's in a one-off color (for a SS Eclipse) in dark candy red. My buddy has an FT in silverburst and he paid more than I would have.
The FT Eclipses are great, but I actually prefer the regular thickness ones.
