Most overrated amp ever... pick 1!

Man, I don’t know, I’m compelled to say: most amps. Or at least: lots of amps.

Tungsram 12ax7 NOS in Box and tested

    I’d buy one for $69

    More hype than heavy hitter

Ground Zero might be something to consider. I’ve never played one, but they seem like modded Marshalls with a heavy, tight, low mid emphasis. Lots of tone-shaping features. I think their flagship is the Helion, maybe? Clips sound great, though on the modern side.

    School me on Wizard amps

Wow! Great looking craftsmanship there in those gut shots. Oh man, SIX preamp tubes? Is there a tube-buffered loop? Because, damn!

    Any tone talk watchers?

I gotta say: I think it’s so incredibly cool that guys like Dave F., Josh from JHS etc have podcasts where they actually have their “competitors” on as guests, and tout their products. (You don’t see Nike or Coca Cola praising Reebok or Pepsi on any podcast, or anywhere else!) In these times...

    Any tone talk watchers?

I think it’s a great show/source for knowledge and insight on gear, tone, music etc. However, it does drag on from time to time. And they have big corporate sponsors sometimes—I’m not down with that. But it’s not a huge deal. And they have “smaller” DIY guys on the show, that’s awesome...

    Morris UK68 Amplifier

Is the Morris loop similar to the Metro loop?

MF has gotten worse than SW

I hear ya man. That shit annoys me, big time. StewMac is doing the same shit. I get emails and texts—just about every day. Motherfuckers need to chill.

    Friedman Vintage Plexi

Killer tone. Is that a specific mod that only you do, or something that’s been around for a long time?

    Friedman Vintage Plexi

#001?! Cool! If I may: what is the enmity mod? I’m curious.

    Friedman Vintage Plexi

I’ve got one coming this summer. I’m beyond stoked!🤟

    Morris UK ‘78 experience

I think you nailed it: builders like Morris, Germino, Metro, Dr Dan etc are building amps that bring killer tone and performance, in some cases better than vintage gear. You can gig and tour with them, play the shit out of them—no problem, no worrying about them getting finicky or blowing up...

    Friedman Vintage Plexi

I’ve been wondering the same thing. The Metroplex MKII has G’s emulation magic happening, but the Suhr SLs seem very similar to the Plex; variac switch and other EVH tweaks, and I think their MVs are similar. Someone needs to do an A/B clip with them. So, are there any real differences...

    Morris UK ‘78 experience

I hear ya. I’ve had experiences with Friedman, Bogner etc where they can sound/feel a bit refined or modern or whatever and lack some aggressive, raw, open thing—which I really dig. I have an SL68, a Bray 4550 and some others. They deliver! I have a Metroplex MKII coming and I’m hoping and...

    Morris UK ‘78 experience

I think that sounds great! Especially for a simple clip. Sounds really open and articulate. And the growl from whatever that boost is—killer. 🤟

    Morris UK ‘78 experience

Personally, I’m not concerned with vintage this or that, or nostalgia or whatever; just tone, performance, reliability, craftsmanship and so on. These guys—Morris, Germino, Dr Dan, Metro, etc—they are so damn knowledgeable, so adept at their craft and so fucking good at what they do. That’s who...

    Morris UK ‘78 experience

From what I’ve read and heard, G. Morris is a first-class builder and knows his shit—vintage gear, tone, craftsmanship—big time. Personally, I’d go with the UK 78. You’ll get a fantastic amplifier, you’ll be able to speak with the guy who built it and it will outlive all of us—not to mention...

It's Really, REALLY hard to beat a (Well-Tuned and Maintained) Old Plexi

Totally. I’m with you guys; I have no problem whatsoever with collectors or people who dig “vintage correct” gear or whatever. It’s a cool hobby/interest and it’s cool that guys are into it. I even learn stuff from them now and again. I think the friction appears when they barge into the...

It's Really, REALLY hard to beat a (Well-Tuned and Maintained) Old Plexi

I’m curious: how do amps such as the SL68, Plex, Germino, Dr Dan etc compare to an actual, vintage Super Lead? I would guess most guys would say the ones I just listed are better in the reliability, practicality department; but what about just straight up tone? I’m trying to “poke the bear”...

68/69 MARSHALL SUPER LEAD PLEXI CLONE

I got two Friedmans, a Twin Sister and a Smallbox50, I’d trade either one for that amp. I also have a Dr Z Maz38. The TS and Maz38 are basically brand new. SB is from….2017, 18?
