I put this off for way too many years. I am so far behind because of it. The last few years I have made it a point too be playing with others. My progress in a single year eclipses all the years prior. Find people of all styles and skills. It works.
 
Yeahp been slowly getting hard on myself for playing sloppily. Same dealios. Hectic life means hectic playing though, undeniable.
 
Yeah practicing at a very slow speed will force you stay alert to anticipate when the next beat is coming.

Also what Ed said is very true. The technique with as little click as possible over time can work wonders.

I also agree that tempo is a communal thing, not just the drummers job.
