i need to improve my timing and rythmn.. i bought a metronome and played w/records but it's still difficult.
any advice?

Keep practicing and go slowly, no matter how painful it is. You don't practice until you can do it right, you practice until you can't do it wrong.

there is a good vid in about it.Basically the guy set the metronome at 160 and played quarter notes. Then he set the metronome at 80 and played 8th notes, then at 40bpm playing 16th, at 20 bpm 32nd and finally at 10 bpm 64th (16 notes per bit). Then he upped the challenge by adding 4/4 pauses at the metronome loop.I used guitar pro to write some loops. It helped quite a bit.Hope it helps

Get Extreme Pornograffiti. Nuno is a master of well timed riffs and chugging.

Monster and He Man Woman Hater have great riffs. Nuno has YT vids showing you how to play much of it and you can see his right hand technique. He seems to almost dance with the guitar keeping time. He can lead or lag the correct time just enough to plant a hook.

He does not get much love on here, but I think Billy Gibbons is a master at that timing mojo as well.

Good luck with it.

All good points, but most certainly, start slowly - downstrokes; then perfectly timed upstrokes, then perfectly timed alternate picking. Boring as all bloody hell, but crucial.

Also, determine what pick (plectrums) really work for you. I've been using the same type of picks for decades and only recently started experimenting with other picks. The Jazz IIIs are seeming like quite the positive influence to my accuracy and feel - only picked them up this past weekend.

Mojo

i'll go the other way and mention the guthrie approach - just play through more styles of music and to more backing tracks that include real players.

while you're hammering away in a musical environment, keep trying new things. don't settle for what your hands do - get a notion in your head and make a reality out of it.

The metronome is great approach for some. I just can't seem to do it with any consistency

However, guys like Petrucci swear by the metronome.

I prefer to play music, as was mentioned earlier. Like playing with backing tracks and/or recordings. That's the way I get the "feel" of a tune.

Exercises are great, yet not very musical. Try both and see what works best for you.

As Race mentioned, go slowly and speed will come :m17:
