Well I just ordered a VH4 and I can't wait to get it. But I have no idea what to use for a footswitch. Anybody have any good suggestions for a good simple midi controller?

I use a Boss FC50 (same as Roland) with my VH4.

If you only need a channel switcher, here is the one I'm using. 1 button for each channel. Draws power from the amp off a standard 5-pin MIDI cable. Randall RF-4.

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I can't wait till I get it!

the GCP is a great footswitch. I used one with my Herbert before I bought a Diezel Columbus.

Any reason you switched to the Columbus over the GCP?

I got a good price on one and I wanted everything to be Diezel since I'm a geek about that stuff. The GCP is actually a better unit since it can do alot more than the Columbus.

Forgive me, for I am rather new to the idea of MIDI switching, but what all can you program on the VH4? I know you can program the 4 channels obviously, the mute, the master effects loop, and the channel inserts. Am I missing anything? And could I say, program one button on my controller for channel 2 with the insert on and one button on my controller for channel 2 with the insert on? The manual mentions something about being able to hold 128 programs, but why so many? What could I possibly use all those for? Am I missing something here?

mainly effects... combination of channels + different effects :).

i use a ground control pro and its awesome. the capabilities of it go way beyond what i would ever need from a midi pedal. i reccommend them, and so does almost everyone else i know.

yes, you could program your vh4 to do what you've asked. the options/combinations are unlimited. just set the vh4, set your midi pedal to the patch you want, and push store twice. very simple.

i have 4 buttons on my ground control set to each channel, and four set to each channel with the loop on for effects. this allows me to jump from any channel (dry or wet) to any other channel (dry or wet) with only one tap, and even leaves more buttons open for a few extra channel/fx patches. i won't get into it, but this is only a primitive example of the midi capabilities of the vh4 with effects and a ground control pro. ;)

This is exactly what I want to do...how do I set this up??[/quote]

First run through stomp 1 to channel 1 on the V, hit store 2x. Done. Do this for the rest of the 3 channels. Then test. Done. Then, get your FX to loop through the Parallel Loop on the back, Send 2. Go back to the stomp (MIDI footswitch), and change up a row (so originally you were 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, whatever...then BANK UP to 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, whatever). Once the next "bank" of numbers is on your F/S, hit the first button, go to the V, channel 1 + Send2 + Store 2x, done. Channel 1 is now looping through the parallel FX loop, and is stored in button/stomp No.6 on your footswitch. Do this for the remaining 3 channels of the V.

PM me if this makes no sense whatsoever.

You should be able to order a white one straight from diezel..Awesome rig and super clean wiring!Hope to have me a rig like that some day. What do you think about the VH4 and the new Diezel cab?I played a Herbert the other week and loved it,too bad I cant afford it.

Not sure who you're referring to, but my V and FL4x12 Cab kick serious ass - sonic perfection. Surgically tight. Loud. Amazing response from wall shaking lows to those highs that just bounce around the rooms' walls. I love the match up. It's amazing... And quite honestly louder than most others tried (it breaks up past 1pm on MV, but it's a controlled break up - think - gain level II - beautiful thing to behold most certainly.

Ive used various pedals to do the trick...budget ones by randall,tc elec.g-minor...or go w/ all out a full midi board like some are saying....

simple- Tech21 Midi Moose...enuff to control all channels. plug n play pretty much

advanced- Ground Control Pro or Columbus. can do it all..amp, efx, launch rockets.

I've heard some not-so-good things about the ground control pro, that there is a noticeable lag in switching and they "pop" often. I was recommended a Bradshaw switching system by more than one person. Although, be prepared to shell out quite a bit of $$ for one, to the tune of $600 and $700.
