Hello,

I have the possibility to buy a Diezel Einstein 100 W, but it's too much power for me. It is not a new one.
I would like to know if there is a mod to switch it to 50 W.
Perhaps buy removing 2 of the 4 power tubes ?

Thanks for advance

Yes, you may remove two of the four power tubes BUT you must remove either the two outside ones (1&4) or the two inside pair(2&3).
Also if you are playing through a 16 ohm cab at one hundred watts, when removing two power tubes, you MUST switch the ohms down to 8 ohms for the 50 watt mode.

Don't worry: the 100W head sounds better to my ears than the 50W anyway - even at low volumes. :) There's no such thing as too much power. :P

MORE POWER. MORE POWER!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks a lot for response !

And for a 8 ohm cab, the head must be connected to 4 ohm i suppose ?

From what I understand...there is only 3DB difference between a 50 watt amp and a 100 watt amp....correct me if I'm wrong??

I was going to say the same. In my understanding there would be 6dB of difference between a 50W and 100W head. I'm getting that from 20*log10(50/100). While it is a lower volume, you won't find it to be significant.

I'd recommend to instead get a power attenuator. I have an old Tom Sholz power soak and it brings the output down by up to 24 dB or so. You can get them used for around $50. If you want to buy a new power attenuator look into the THD hot plate. They run around $250 I think.

Just connect the power attenuator in-line between the head and the cabinet.

Also have the 100W Einstein.

Just to recap, I could remove either, outer or inner pair. Then I'd have to plug my 16 Ohm cab into the 8 Ohm connection, would that be correct?

Could I also achieve the same by just removing one of the tube fuses instead of pulling the tubes?

Thanks for answering my dummy questions ...

Yup.

But pulling the fuse instead of the tubes itself would result in constantly heating the unused tubes, which would result in cathode poisoning.

I'd pull them. And yes, set the amp to 8 if you're using a 16 Ohm cab.

There's 2 dB equations:

power ratio in dB is: 10*log10(P1/P2)

The amplitude ratio as a voltage or whatever would be: 20*log10(V1/V2)

Has to do with Power being related to Voltage squared (P = V^2 / R), so when you log things the square becomes a factor of 2, hence 20 instead of 10 in the 2 equations above.

So I'll go with 3dB power, since I don't know the actual voltage amplitudes created! (It's a 17dBW amp vs. a 20dBW amp)

Right, back to my FCC radio emissions power measurements in dBs!

Hello,

In the same way... is it possible to switch the 50W Einstein head from 50 to 25W ?? :scared:

I've been running my 100 wtt Einy for years with 2 tubes pulled.I love it,gives you a littel more sag.Unless you have the cash for a really good power soak ,go the tube route. Most power soaks change the tone :( Besides the Einy has one of the best masters I've ever used.Note.. bias voltage changes a hair when running 2 tubes.

No. Push-Pull Power stages need a minimum of two tubes to function. The 50W version could probably be modded to get a triode/pentode switch though, which would drop the power, too.

3dB is 2x as much SPL (+/- all things being equal)

Just sayin'...

Dear Guys,

we don´t recommend to pull tubes concerning
the sound quality and the internal voltages.

To change the output impedance is not the
right way to compensate the mismatching
on the output transformer.

Best regards,
Peter

Honestly, I wouldn't even bother. With the Awesome Master, and Power amp Controls, I have never, ever, ever, heard a better Tube Amp at low volumes at any wattage than the Ein. It sounds incredible low as it does cranked. And, with two cabs, it doesn't thin out like some. It is a killer all-around.
