Just got the first shipment of Motor City Pickups! Been doing some testing, and so far have been blown away. Not ready for any reviews yet, but I'll have a much better idea after the weekend once I can hear them some more.

Check out the Luxxtone site for what's in stock and ready to ship.....

I got my 2nd degree BB in the other day from Wade and I love them. I put those in my Goldtop and I also have a set of Detroiters in another Les Paul. Wades PU's kick ass.

Very cool. How hot are they? I may just have to try some MCP. I am thinking of the Afwayus since I think the 2nd degree BBs might be too weak for me.

I think they will not be enough Dave. I got a set and the sound great but not enough compared to my Afwayus!

the second degree black belt has about the same output as the voodoo 59 dave.

They are not hot at all. More of a vintage output. I like the lower output PU's.

Dave

The Afwayu's are bad ass. But dont work to well for crystal clean tones. I have an afwayu set in one of my McCarty's and they were a 200% improvement over stock. I love them. The tone tripled in size. My next MCP order will be the Torque or the Angel Dust.

My Afwayu's went in last night. I only had one short session so not ready to do a full review yet as I am not done tweaking yet. Although they are much higher output than 2nd degrees which I am digging so far. They clean up well, not at good as 2nd degrees, but that is to be expected. So far I am really liking leads - they just explode off the fretboard, killer! Though I am still working on height, etc to get "my" rhythm tone, which I love LOTS of mids. I changed the strings last night so now it's in that ultra bright mode for a session or two (no fault to the pup). But I have to travel all of next week so may be a bit before I get to play again

What ones did you get?

Sorry Dave couldn't respond yesterday because my power was out due to the fires here. Just came back on this morning. The flames are creeping down into Pasadena, really terrible.

Anyway, you can check out the site http://www.luxxtone.com/home.php?cat=44 for what's in stock. Blackbelt, 2nd Degree Blackbelt, Torque, Afwayu, Angel Dust, and Detroiter are in and ready to ship!

So far out of the ones I checked out my favorite is the Detroiter. It's like a slightly hotter version of the 2nd Degree Black belts at around 9.2k, with a little bit of a mid bump that makes it sound pissed off. It drives the amp harder than you would think, and is ultra clear and pure. Can do everything from Zeppelin and Van Halen to punk rock like Ramones and Sex Pistols. I love it.

The 2nd Degree Blackbelts are lower output at about 8.8k and are super organic and raw sounding, more of a bumped up P.A.F. type tone. Very clear and articulate under distortion, but not high output....probably a little less on the sustain part compared to the other higher output pickups, but the clarity and punch is amazing. Cleans up with just a roll of the volume knob. Very solid and strong tone, pure hard rock.

The Afwayu kills! It's high output, but it doesn't seem as high as 16k...which is why it's so great. It has some of the clearest, most pure drive of any high output pickups I've heard. It drives the amp hard, tons of sustain and sounds huge and 3d...which is usually what you lose with high output pickups. It still sounds very raw because it has this sort of "dry" sound, there's not much of that hi-fi tone to this pickup. It does not give you those crispy ultra-high treble.

The Torque kinda picks up where the Afwayu leaves off. It's the most metal of the pickups I've tried so far. Even though it's at 15k, and the Afwayu is at 16k....it's hotter and voiced more for palm muting metal. The Afwayu does metal great, but the Torque has that crispy treble and more bass, and is more hi-fi sounding. It has more compression, which equals more chug and thump. Tons of sustain, but less single note articulation. My choice for pure metal and death metal.

The Angel Dust is very unique. It sounds like an amazing version of an old Duncan JB, but more clear and punchy without the super mid spike. This is a high output pickup, with a definite mid spike (but not as harsh as a JB) for a really snarly, angry tone. Slightly less output than Afwayu and Torque, but with a little extra mid and a little bit of the crispy high treble of the Torque, but not as much. It has a little more note definition than the Torque. I still have to hear this pickup some more, it really surprised me how much I dug it.

I will be trying the regular Blackbelts later tonight. Thanks for reading!!

For metal, it is hard to beat a Solution. I have had one fore a the last few months and I am really digging it. Tight and crunchy with a touch of compression.

how do the lows of the Angel Dust compare to the Afwayu?

Thanks for the reviews. The Detroiter and 2nd Degree BB descriptions are dead on.

Solution is excellent - have used one in my SC250 for the last few months with great results.

I've got a Detroiter for my strat and a Blisster for my other Dean on the way. Wade just finished them last Wednesday. Can't wait to get them in the guitars.

Thanks for the detailed posts. I still may have to try the Afwayus, but since reading the descriptions, I think they will sound close to Suhr Aldrich p-ups I already have. :)

The 2nd BB's are plenty hot IMO. They've definitely got more bite than the Marshallhead I had in my LP before...

The Afwayus are not too far off from the Suhr Aldrich, the Afwayu I had seemed to be a little sweeter and warmer than the Aldrich. This is all in Les Paul guitars....

I agree 100%.
I could see them seeming a little weak in a guitar that needs a high output HB, but in a good LP these pickups scream with harmonics out the ass.

Only one way to find out... Iguess I will have to order some. ;)

I'll be testing the Afwayu against the Aldrich today side by side. I'm curious myself. Dave, are you in the LA area? If you are, you're welcome to come to the shop and test them yourself. We have a custom strat style guitar there that is a pickup tester...we can switch out pickups in about 2 minutes with no soldering. That goes for any of you guys in the area....

is the Afwayu an A2 magnet?

the EVH tone chasers were going apeshit over one of the Motorcity pickups?

think it was an Afwayu with and A2, but don't know for sure?
