Modern tonewood combinations

I read somewhere that there was a body-neck-fretboard combination that JS said moved from strat toward LP type of tones. Is it a Mahogany body and Mahogany neck with rosewood/ebony fretboard. Does anyone know what that might be?

I am aware that scale length/set neck are the primary indicator for the LP tone.

IDK... but a mahogany body will sound more like an LP than an alder body will. Same goes with a mahogany neck vs maple neck, probably even more so than the body. Scale length will make a difference, too. IME, a tight-fitting bolt-on will sound much better than a loose-but-glued set-neck. IMO, neck joint types are the least of these factors as long as the neck fits tightly into the body. All of this is just my opinion, though, because I'm not familiar with what JS has said about this.

How about a basswood body type of build?

At the end of the day I have a Gibson LP R0 that I love the tone, but am looking for a Custom Modern that sounds less like a strat and more like a LP.

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of basswood. It is a fairly balanced wood and doesn't sound bad. I just find it to be a little bland tonally, but there are a lot of people who really like it. Its sound is between mahogany and alder. IMO, it's going to be more Strat-like.

FYI, Warmoth has some good information about many different woods used for bodies and necks. You might find the following interesting.
