I'm talking about the standard HEAVY metal riff that sets the bar for heavy metal riffs.

Not sure how popular my submission will be, but for me, it doesn't get much heavier than Fight Fire With Fire by Metallica. I mean, think about it, it's the riff that truly turned the page in metal and took metal to whole new level of heavy. Seriously, what at the time was heavier than FFWF? It just bombards you and kills you right from the start. You know you're listening to a heavy fucking album!

Am I wrong? What's the heaviest riff of all time?

Hard to disagree with one of the forefathers of metal but I would say Suffocation's "Liege of Inveracity''. Completely different genre and time frame but I think the beatdown riff in that song is much heavier than anything Metallica has done as well as most other bands. There was basically an entire genre of metal "Slam" that this single guitar riff defined. Pretty awesome. Check it out, killer song front to back.

While this is a great song from Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey, it's not all that heavy. In fact, Megadeth is not a heavy band at all. I don't know why people say they're so heavy, or why people say they're heavier than Metallica. Metallica is at least three times heavier.

This is damn heavy, but I'm not sure if heavier than the Metallica riff. Probably on par.

Exactly... I usually do have a different answer every day. Could be Anthrax, Maiden, Priest, Megadeth, AIC, hell, even Beethoven or Tchaikovsky (or Wagner), too man to even make a short list. LOVE Overkill, too!

Last time I saw Metallica, they played FFWF. I never thought I'd see that live, definitely the highlight of that show for me. Their guitar tone on RTL and MOP is still my favorite, but my vote goes (ever so slightly) to Battery. I remember the first time I heard that, just in awe for the entire MOP album and one of the pivotal points in my musical life.

Not that I think that this is as heavy (in this context), but I still remember the first time I heard Where Eagles Dare from Piece of Mind. I just stood there awestruck. I remember thinking that "this [was] the way metal should be played." That moment changed my life... pretty much the same way Battery did. The only difference was the first was about a year before I started playing and the second was about a year after. In both cases, I'm sure the albums as a whole had a greater effect than any of the specific songs, but still...

Maybe tomorrow it'll be Creeping Death...  RTL is such a killer album!

IMO the heaviest album Maiden ever did was Killers. It's the most "metal" for sure. Such a dark, heavy, and sinister sound on that record both musically and lyrically. Just phenomenal. They got more poppy, progy, and operatic with Bruce.

But anyway, this is a "heaviest metal riff of all time" thread, so I don't want to digress too much.

There are so many amazing Pantera riffs, I almost can't pick one of theirs.

I've always thought Napalm Death - Breed To Breathe was several minutes of riffing filth. Intro, verse & chorus riffs are all amazing.

Some great stuff being posted in here.

Pantera had some tasty riffing for sure. Im a vulgar display type of guy through and through. The riff at 2:50 from This Love is very high on the list but the opening riff to I'll cast a Shadow from reinventing the Steel has to be my all time favorite Pantera riff. Still gives me goosebumps when i gear it.

That's the best 9 seconds of the entire album lol

Lots of great suggestions in here, none better than the other all heavy in their own way.

Right now off the top of my head, "Brain Dead" by Exodus, specifically the verse riff but really, the entire song is just heavy

Perhaps not the heaviest, but the verse riff to this Twelve Foot Ninja tune is wicked.

Number of the Beast buries ANYTHING DiAnno did. Much heavier, less prog than pre Bruce.
Really, it's just not even close. They were considered a Prog rock band with DiAnno. They became METAL with Dickinson.

Take your pick from this album.
This is still the heaviest metal album I've heard - it's incredibly dark, weighted down and depressing. Fucking mental how good this record is.
Brutal riffs 101.

Man, totally spaced on this one. The intro to Throes of Rejection is one of my favorite combos of heavy and groovin' at the same time.

IRON MAN

Boom!

Whenever "all time" is mentioned, I have to consider historical lineage. When I consider historical lineage, I can't help but think of the pioneers. And when I think "heavy metal pioneers", it's definitely Sabbath.

That early Black Sabbath is difficult to surpass.

 Were talking about NAKED GUITAR RIFFS here right? Otherwise its what propels & embellishes the riff... & thats just who made a heavy song which isnt really a fair assessment of the riff. You should be able to hear it played on an acoustic, and get chills.

Heaviest naked guitar riff... I believe BLACK SABBATH ---SET--- the standard. There have been many other great heavy riffs since, many by Sabbath.. But I still think this riff holds the evil crown!
