Yep... I agree.
The reason why I agree is that they have been burned outta so much gear it's cheaper for them to hire the girl at the door to check stuff on every customer than reap the losses. Think about it. Very few people will try to lift anything when they know they've got to go thru "customs" to declare everything.
PLUS... I'm sorry to say this, Musicians are flaky people scrounging for money-for the most part. I have so many musicians come to look at gear and say , "Will you hold it for 6ths for me"? OR... "Can I take it now and pay you over the next few weeks"?
Now... not all musicians are flaky, but for the most part...

I live 4 hours away from Pete (ihave27frets), and it's the same here. I haven't seen a pre-pay gas station in a VERY long time.
As far as the Amish bit, there are people known as car Amish (and car Mennonites). I used to live in the heart of Amish country. :study: Also, certain groups are allowed to use cell phones and fax machines, even if they can't use a normal phone. They have some pretty ingenious work-arounds.
In regards to the GC incident and others where they check your receipt - GET THE FUCK OVER IT.
