Saw him in a small/intimate type venue with about 100 people in attendance (School of Rock East--music school for teens and under in South Hackensack, NJ). Stuck around until he left to get some questions answered and help him lug his gear offstage and into the rented Honda Odyssey tourbus

Allan only had his custom made Steinberger with him (which was part of the gear I helped carry ). I asked him which was generating his lead tone, the Zentera or the Switchblades and his answer to me was neither, it was one of the Yamaha Magic Stomps  He said they sound almost as good as the Yamaha DG preamp but, come in a tiny package. What he's looking for in a rig these days is something that could be used with any good amp no matter where he goes in the world that is easy to carry and sounds good. The Hughes & Kettners were just being used for cleans. I was impressed with his lead tone... very smooth for a bridge pickup sound. Couldn't believe it when he said "neither actually..."

Wow... Interesting, I will have to play with my Magicstomp a little bit more, I guess!

Very cool Ivan!

Hey man I can tell you are a daddy.....you put on an extra pound or two :D

Man, helping Holdsworth load up....how cool is that?!?!?!?

when i had the magic stomp i thought the effects in it were as good as most yamaha rack units i've messed with.

so i suppose he was running into the return on the tube amp?

and i also see the tc parametric eq in there, which is also pretty important for the holdsworth horn midrange and digital gnarl reduction.

i wonder if he still uses the tc line booster or mxr line booster on the floor to hit the input extra hard and clear?

i heard a demo of the hk switchblade at NAMM this year and thought "no way is holdsworth using this thing straight..."

it was very pedestrian and flat sounding.

What surprised me more is that he's playing with Jimmy Johnson again. Hell musta frozen over. :)

Damn you Ivan!! I wanted to go so bad but got out of work late. He's playing at Iridium in NYC this week so I might check that out.

Literally only a pound or two :gethim: Camera shots of me from slightly below have never been very flattering plus, I don't really know how to smile

jimmy is sick. the only bass player i've ever heard that had me mesmorized by his tone.

btw eddie d., you posted something on huge racks about a tyler you said was the best you've played...is that a new one of yours?

pics and descriptions (likes/dislikes) of all your tylers would be appreciated...

oh and if you'd like to send me the shawn lane vigier, and the flexi half stack rig you let me play through a few years back, you may certainly do so!

Methinks that Steinberger is actually a DeLap.

My conversation about the guitar--

Ivan: Allan, is that a guitar you made yourself? Allan: No, actually that is a custom guitar made for me by Steinberger.

I love JJ, but as I understood it there was some bad blood between them.

As for the Tylers...I got a hollow alder BW that was just unbelievable. Then I got a hollow ash/alder/ash SE HD, that eats the BW.
It has his Big V neck and it's huge, yet really fast. Sounds amazing. And it's the first Tyler where I actually liked the mid boost build in it.
The wood combination and it being hollow makes it sound like the best old Strat I ever played. As funny as it may sound.

As for the Vigier SL and Flexi...yeah I can dig it...

i love that clip!

kinda like ford on the stinging high notes, with a hint of holdsworth midrange fatness...you make the fulltone pedal sound good, and i don't care for the d pro or the fulldrive...now the ocd is a different story!

didn't you also have a tyler burning water tele?

i really liked the tones he got from the delap bari into the mark III juice extracted rig.
you'd swear it was coltrane blowing on a sax into a neumann mic!

Long story short...
The guy who's the executive prod on my album had this bitchen BW Tele I got him from Tyler. I always loved that guitar. I was going to have Jim build me one, and found out they had been dscontinued. So I bought my buddy's. Or more specificall he send it to me and told me to order the ultimate SE. Well, when the studio elite came it was soooooo cool, and he missed his Tele that we cancelled the deal. Plus Jim said he'd make me a Tele. :)

looks like he likes cutting the low end quite a bit:
-20db@300, -5db@1k on the bass pre,

-7.5db@200hz, +5db@1.2k, -20db@300hz, +5db@20k??(or higher...can't see the frequency range on the last band of eq on the 1140)

makes me want a 1140 all of a sudden :D

Those aren't his settings. That's where the pots ended up after I finished working on it.
