My friend is looking for a versatile preamp..

He's in a band in which his gain will most likely be a metal zone pedal.. but he's looking for a decent tube preamp to use with that, and then for his solo stuff.. when he's not looking for the metal zone tone.

recommendations?

He was looking for a Mesa Studio Pre... then I also recommended the Engl E-530 since it's in his price range new.

Not sure what else there is out there that's good preamp wise..

Rocktron voodu valve is an absolute killer preamp in that price range.

I'd say ADA or Engl E530. I don't know much about the Voodo Valve, but I like most Rocktron stuff...

Digitech 2101
they may be used but they aint used up
i spend an hour or 2 a day with mine for the past 6 months
I SEE NO END in OPTIONS :m8:

i havent even scratched the surface yet
one unit ill keep untill it die's
i picked up mine in an unopened box for $100 bucks
in 96 they were priced $1,100

i see used updated units on the net going for $ 300 - $ 400 dollors
2101 / 2120 are the way to go

and stay away from the NEW digitech unit i think it is
called a GSP 1101 this is a joke for sure !

I need to pick up another 2101. The one I had was fricken crazy. So many options and the tones were awesome too. Some of the effects are wacky as hell.

Voodu Valve is what the dude from Arsis uses live through a solid state power amp and his tone is great.

rump bump

it appears he's still going to buy the Engl at this point... but keeps the recommendations coming if you have any others

the clips on dereks site, sounded sick, so i'm sure the engl would sound better than the metal zone. i also played a rocktron prophecy a while back at sam ash, and the distortion settins on it were awsome. i'm pretty sure either one would be a much better choice than a distortion pedal.

our buddy uses the 2101 in his Rush tribute band.. he loves it.

Voodoo Valve....take out the 12ax7 and put in a 12at7.

ah so this is where all the cool people from HC went.

Anyways thanks for asking about the pre for me FG.

Yeah thats about right Tube Pre. But for this band the gain has to be metal zone cause we're going for that tin can metal sound. I like the idea of the Mesa Studio Pre and the Engl es530 which is pretty much what I was looking for.
But it's been kind of a pain to find a simple tube pre for guitar. I've owned the ADA back in the late 80s or early 90s. The Voodoo seems cool but I don't want on board effects. I plan on getting a g major for that and I'm not a big effects person, other than wah.

Studio Pre, E530, and Rockmaster are all pretty straight forward

Peavey Rockmaster...
I Love My Rockmaster Too
and use the Radial BIGSHOT ABY to run them preamps together
it sounds like a Million Bucks with the 2101
the only differnce is the 2101 has just 2 tube's
while the Rockmaster has 4 together its just Sic
