it DIDNT have the external bias?? I found a used one I'd like to get, it's actually serial number 1.

This of course DOES NOT have the external bias. I have never biased a tube head anyways....and probably won't ever.

Did the Herbert series ever have a "better" sounding version, like how the VH4 blue face is a little different then the new design, or do all Herberts kick equal amounts of ass, regardless of the bias....

YOUR OPINIONS ARE GREATLY APPRECIATED!

Play it and decide.
I wouldn't care too much about the biasing. You'd need a digital multimeter in both cases (external - internal). And the only big difference is, that you have to take it out of the headshell. Biasing itself is easy, in either way you have to pull fuses, attach your multimeter and read currents, then adjust.

Soundwise there is a difference. Later serial models are less stiff sounding. But in the end thats a matter of personal preference.

Not a big deal...and in no way should it be a reason not to buy a Herbert.

The external bias is just a "nice-to-have" feature, not a "gotta-have".

If it bothers you to have to open the case to set the bias for new tubes, then you probably shouldn't be doing it yourself...let someone else do it.

I have one of the older models and I don´t miss the bias-stuff.

I´d say I prefere the older ones because their layout is more simple. And if you´re honest, you know that the external biaspoints are not neccessary.

Play it...if you like it...go for it!

if you dont know how to do it, then it aint a biggie.

I like to swap tubes and tinker, so I really like the feature of not having to pull the head out of the shell in order to bias it!

Don't be afraid of internal biasing. I've only been shocked once so far biasing my amp. It didn't hurt THAT bad...

The problem is that I can't try the amp first, it's via an online deal. From people that have tried both models is there really THAT MUCH of a difference in tone? I'm convinced I don't need to bias it, the tone thing worries me a bit though...

What do you mean by stiff?

In what year are the newer models not that "stiff"?
I got mine in 2004.
Thanks. :)

Earlier models have a faster attack and do sound a bit harder. Not that the later ones are soft at all - just some minor differences. As I've said - a bit less "stiff", definitely not a quantum step away, just nuances, you know . . .

What do you mean by sounding "harder"? Do you mean: the later models are more organic and dynamic / responsive? Smoother?
Please expand on this if you could. Also is the circuitry the same with a variation in part values, etc, or is it different?
Thanks

Do you know what the serial no. is?
What's the seller looking for in terms of price?

Yes, it´s a small variation of part values. I assume many people
will not hear this

whic are differences between new and older Herbert models?
which serial identifies the new series?
