If you only had $500 and needed an amp what would you get?

A head and cab are virtually out of the question, so what's a sweet combo? This is what I'm thinking about/looking at...

Randall RG50TC
Traynor YCV50 Blue
Crate 50 watt 2x12 Palemino
Marshall Artist
Misc. Laney combos
MIsc. Carvin combos

1x12 or 2x12, must have power tubes, prefer two channels, and the more bells and whistles the better. Must be able to do all forms of rock (heavy, hard, punk, stoner) but not necessarily metal. This has to tide me over till I can get my hands on a JVM head.

Thanks, as always.

Do you gig or practice with a band or are you just needing something to noodle around with at home?

I'm on an MTS kick again since getting an RM50HB Head....and I spotted this..

http://mtsforum.grailtone.com/viewtopic.php?t=1773 ?

It's a Randall MTS RM20B Combo....never heard the EL84 version but there's no shortage of tones to be had with the different pre-amp modules, although you only get one slot/channel with the RM20.

EDIT: just noticed the stock speaker listed is a Greenback..so that would be cool too :D

I would look for a used JSX combo. That is me. I don't know if you can get one for $500.....but if you could...that would kick ass!

I would be jamming with a band (drums, bass, other guitar player has a Dual Rec and 2x12 cab) so it has to have some power.

I've been reading that the Peavey Valveking combos sound like crap and everyone says to get the head versions. Any truth to this?

And I don't want anything with EL84's. Just a personal preference. :D

Looks like you dig the Marshall sound. I'd say get a JCM800 4010 combo or similar. I used to have one. Great sounding and simple amp, pity I sold it one day...

Never played the combo, only the head and I thought it sounded pretty good for what it's worth, I'm even thinking about picking up the head.

What do you play??

Used 5150s could be had for $500 and you would have the headroom if jamming in a band situation.

The Traynors are nice as well.

Tech 21 TM60
DSL401
Carvin MTS3212
Blues Deluxe

These all have a different flavor but would suit your needs for the most part.

If I could find one around $500, believe me I would be all over it.

dsl401, on fleabay all day for around 450 to 500. or a jcm 600, could be had cheaper, and its a killer amp

You'd have to look really hard to score a 5150 for $500 now. The prices are up to about $700. That's pretty much what they're all selling for now.

Mesa Boogie Subway Rocket. They came with either a 10 or 12 inch speaker, of course the 12in versions are higher wattage. Very good sounding combo. Much better than a Peavey classic 50 combo i once owned, that thing was a mush machine.

hey there's always an old bassman head w/ a tube zone pedal!
