I had one I used at home and at gigs for YEARS. Killer sounding amp bro, just a LOUD amp... No two ways about it... Loud and GREAT sounding!

I play mine at less than ear-toasting volumes all the time.
I like it...... no problems.

I didn't know you still had an SLO?! I thought you had gotten rid of them.
I did play mine at much less than ear blistering volumes at home as well.
That volume taper goes to loud very quickly though doesnt' it...lol

I had many thru the years, but i got one from MF a few months ago. Bone stock.
There's a clip in my sig.

the volume taper is great. it's doesn't come up fast at all. easy to adjust.
Some guy has an SLO/Les Paul clip on YouTube.
He's got the gain half and hitting it with a FD-II and it rules.
I gotta find it.

I never ran a pedal in front of mine to be honest. I just never thought it needed one. You didn't find at around 3 on the number of the dial it just went to scream? Mine sure did... I mean it went full on LOUD! But it would keep getting louder the more I cranked the knob.

I always used the 5881 tubes in it too. I never switched it over to KT66 tubes. Now the Decatone I bought twice later, came loaded with KT66s and it did sound great.

I always found (for me) it sounded best loud. I played and practiced with it at home a LOT but it always just sounded like it was supposed to sound with some volume happening. It sang more.

That is a good sound and a VERY low volume! That is the way I HAD to practice at home with mine too. Volume so low you and hear the pick on the strings. Fulldrive sounds really good with that amp.

I really dug the KT66s in the Decatone for sure though. I kinda wish I had
tried them in the SLO at least once.

You need more volume than most would say is acceptable bedroom level...but it doesn't need to be on 10 to sound good.

Depends on how loud you can play in your bedroom really. If TV volume is what you are shooting for, I say no (go with a VHT, Engl, Mark series).

1900 for a snakeskin. sounds pretty good to me. I was curious about the volume taper. How's the cleans on it guys?

Listen to Mark Knopfler on any of the older Dire Straits cds live and you will hear EXACTLY what they sound like. I have a hard time describing them but those cds sound exactly what mine sounded like mang!

$1900 ain't bad for one and you can get that back out of it when you decide to sell IF you do. Any mods? I liked mine bone stock to be hoenst bro!

The cleans are more than usable. Allthough, I had two and one was better than the other (stock was better).

Get it, I have one that is bone stock and will never sell it. One thing to remember about the SLO is that unless there is something wrong with it or it has been modified, they all sound great. Marshall tone on steriods with great focus.

Do you have a pic of the "chrome croc" tolex? That sounds pretty sweet.

Not at this time. I'm in Louisiana right now, but will be heading to my house in Florida in a couple of weeks, it's there. I will try to remember and snap a pic for you.

I think the SLO is a killer amp with one of the best lead tons going. But like others have stated it is friggin loud. Not my first chioce for home use unless you have one big ass room and your neighbors aren't real close.

SLO's are about pre-amp distortion for the most part in their design. So bedroom levels don't kill it. But when you do get the chance to crank it, hold on tightly.

If I wasn't going to move it and it was going to be a bedroom amp, I'd probably get a JVM over an SLO.

I love the SLO's lead sound. Unfortunately the EQ/preamp need to be set differently when you need access to the other sounds, so its a one trick pony if used live - not the case for you me thinks.
Also IMO it needs some (minor) modifications to be more state of the art like DC heaters for the preamp tubes, a deep/depth and the exchange of two resistors (one in clean mode, esp. with Strats and one for crunch).

I wouldn't say it doesn't sound good at bedroom levels - like any other tube amp it sounds better cranked of course - but you could think about a X88R preamp (which IMO is killer and has a better crunch sound than the SLO) and a small poweramp, even some MOS stuff from Marshall or Rocktron does the job very well, and try that approach.

All IMO of course.

thanx guys. I'm gonna hold off on it for now. if anyone is interested in it-it's for sale on musicgoround. I've never played a Soldano and that seemed like a pretty good deal to me. I'll post a link to it later.

It's probably one of the last amps I think of for good low volume tones. It does OK at low volumes, but in order to get great tones you need the master up above 3, preferably 4. IMHO.
