Got Cornford ???

I bought a MK50 II a few months ago and have been floored at how great it sounds, both in the studio and in rehearsal. The amp is very versatile, and surprisingly gets great metal rhythm tones, even though I hear it was designed to be more of a lead player's amp. I also hear the original model didn't have quite as much gain on tap but I don't know for sure.

I play it with 6l6's and so far it cuts through the mix better than any other amp I have rehearsed with or jammed on before. The EQ controls are very powerful and I find that I rarely fidget with the knobs like my previous Mesas and Bogner Uber. The clean tone is to die for...

I also tried a hellcat but wasn't nearly as impressed.

The guitar teacher at my store has a Cornford MK50H and that thing sounds absolutely killer. I love that amp.

That will most likely be my next amp. I have always loved the sound of this amp and will get one someday.

Do you know if either the MK50H or the MK50 II can be set up to run EL34's ?

Thanks ~

I know the MK II can be but I'm pretty sure the MK has to be modded to take EL's. MK II is definitely the way to go. Fuck, now I want one and all I can afford is a JVM or VM right now. Thanks alot, man.

my MK50 II has a bias switch for 6l6 or EL34, but I don't know about the MK I.

which amp is he using in the youtube videos?? I love that tone too ... (Hellcat maybe)?

Personally, I did not care for the mids in the MK50 .... weird honkiness ...

{EDIT} it is the Hellcat ....

Ugh..

One day, a Mk 50 will be mine. At least I can still keep telling myself this, right? :(

My Mk50 had PLENTY of gain on tap. I never, ever used a pedal with it for anything. I simply sounded great for everything I tried to play with it.

I wish I had never sold it:(

Good info man

My JVM is back where it belongs....the money is back in my account, and the re-energized search continues....

Bwahahaahahahahahahahah ;) Man, these Cornfords do have a clarity about them, and the Guthries, Kotzens and Howes do have the touch - but the characteristics of the amp do shine through. The guy that bought my Bogner 4x12 just called and gave me the rundown on the MK50H and the Hellcat he owned....he's pretty bummed not to have the MK50 anymore...hmmmmm.

I just watched those videos...trying to take it all in. I'm just blown freaking away by Guthrie's utter total command of the guitar

That tone is pretty killer....

I see the MK II has a gain control and overdrive control on channel 2 as well as resonance. My guess is it's able to utilize powertube distortion at lower volumes- that would be why it would have more high gain. That's definitely the Cornford to get if you're looking to play 'heavier' music. Hellcat has thinner tone but a little more saturation I have been told...Truth?

Jesus the playing on the RK100 Waves clip is just stupid and the tone

How much? 3K?

I was quoted $3800 although you might be able to find it cheaper... but not much.

When I went to my first NAMM show, I dropped by the Cornford booth and I caught Guthrie doing a demo. Needless to say I stayed at the booth for 3 hours just watching him play. That's saying a lot especially since I wanted to go to NAMM since the 80's!! I must have looked like a psycho stalker but Guthrie was cool as hell and getting to watch him play 2ft in front of me was nothing short of incredible. Watching him play pretty much showed me just how much I really suck at guitar and thats a fact!!

Oh on another note, The cornfords were cool but Not for the $$$ they are asking for them...............IMHO.

Yeah, pretty big $$$ - but it would be all about the used market for me which puts it a shade more in touch. ...

Even on the used market I would have to pass.
I was a huge Cornford fan when they first came out until I played them at NAMM. Works great for Guthrie but they Just didn't work for me. That said, You might love them!! I would like to hear what you think of them if you pick one up.

Yeah I would be all over the used market, just too much coin for me.

utilise powertube distortion at lower volumes? how would that work?

i've tried the hellcat, but not the mk50 (either version), so I can't compare, by the way.

LOL Ralphie i did the same thing last november at the Music Live convention here in the UK. I stood at the Cornford stand for hours, got to meet Guthrie and say hello and then pretty much stood there watching him play for another hour! I looked like some kind of stalker but i was just honestly blown away by his playing

He was playing the MK50II and I think i liked it better than the original MK50!
