again with this

I have a JAN Phillips and a Tung-Sol preamp tubes...

I dropped the Tung-Sol in V1 first... and the JAN Phillips second. Tests thus far are at "bedroom" volume (or as close as you can get with a fiddy).

The Tung-Sol immediatly was a marked difference. More. More gain and more highs. More saturation. Sounds great!

The Jan Phillips wasn't as impressive. However, I have a feeling that at high volume there is some thing to be heard. I didn't get the "creamy/buttery" thing I expected for a $50 tube... It sounded thinner. Like it turned my cweramic picups into alnico. Not bad at all. I would like to try again at band volume.

for now, I am leaving the Tung-Sol in the V1... Maybe I'll find a good place for the Jan Phillips down the chain.

these are my first impressions.

anybody else have input on this?

I really like the Tung-Sol in my 5150 & Tverb. Just have them in V1 right now; someday I'd like to load them in all positions.

There's a Tung Sol in V1 of the 5150 I just got. It sounds good, but I haven't tried the RFT in it yet.

Is this the "$50.00 tube" you're talking about??

Or this one???

More likely this one:

I like them fairly well in the V2 and later stages but they're not going to be "Creamy or smooth" like you'll get from a RFT or Tungsram etc. IMHO they're more like a current production high gain tube in tone but better clarity and detail.

I haven't liked the tung sols in any of the amps I've tried them in. They're OK but after playing with them a while then switching back I find they're lacking something.

Are they really $50.00 ?? For a preamp tube? My 5150 eats them like candy, 4- 6 months max.
My Revolution seems to get better life out of the 12ax7's, but I don't know about the power amp tubes. The 5881's are running way hotter than the 6L6's in the 5150.

Those are 40.00 plus shipping from Dougs tubes, You'd probably find that they last 2-4 times as long as what you're using so the price difference isn't as bad as it sounds.

Yeah, the JAN Phillips I got from Doug.

I want to find a use for that sucker. "Better clairity and detail"? Maybe it will sound good in my Recto pre... I'll try that and down the signal chain later.

Hmmm, at the moment, I am really liking the Tung-Sol. Nice and crunchy.
