Exactly. I dont listen to it for songs either. Thats why I can only take like 15 minutes of it before I want to shoot myself in the fucking face. Its get to the point of being un-musical. Its wank for the sake of wank. If thats your thing, awesome.

I prefer "music."

i think it's safe to say that, as musicians, we all "preferP music...but, as musicians, we can all appreciate some guy that can shred the face off a rhino...good song or not. it's all mood shit. sometimes i wanna hear yngwie shred or a rip-your-house-down breakdown or some trippy isis or tool mellowness or some pummeling death metal...juss depends on the mood brutha.

I do not listen to Yngwie to tap my foot along to a catchy polished song about losing some girl....I listen to him bringing the pain.
At the last Yngwie show I went to, he did this 30 second warmup/equipment check before he started the show and when he was done, I said, "Thank you and Goodnight!" because he had basically played every riff he then repeated ad nauseum for the next two hours. As I said though, it was 30 seconds of great shit.

For a guy not being a songwriter he has many albums under his belt.

Granted, he's not Guthrie Govan selling out Tone Merchants, playing the same fucking tunes the last 5 years.... that are intended for the idiots staring at his fingers, thinking how clever to stick all those tricks into one tune....meanwhile the tunes are boring as shit finger excersizes.

Who's around longer? Who will be remembered as somebody who brought something new to the table? Not Guthrie, thats for sure.

i hate to say it but...WORD.

My 2 cents worth...
Any player that will divide opinions on a scale like Yngwie has done frm decades got soemthing going for them.

Plus he does have one of the hippest vibratos of any post 70s guy I can think.

BTW Carl, as far as I know Yngwie has worked a day gig before, he worked in the guitar repair section of a music store before coming to the US.

1.) You're right. Yngwie is no doubt a songwriter. I love, "I am a Viking!". Killer tune! :)

2.) My understanding is that Guthrie Govan is perfectly happy playing his little gigs. He doesn't seem to care about making it big like Yngwie.

3.) Guthrie definitely needs to write some new material. He has been playing the same tunes for a few years and could use a couple new ones.

4.) "that are intended for the idiots staring at his fingers, thinking how clever to stick all those tricks into one tune...." - MAN!! If that doesn't describe Yngwie as well, then I don't know what does...

5.) I don't find Guthrie's tunes are boring as shit. Of course, I'm sure others do.

6.) Yngwie will be remembered and not Guthrie, but that doesn't make him better or a great songwriter. There are plenty of unknowns who are great players and writers. Getting famous is a whole other subject...

It's cool, I was just stoked to be there where the shred scene started :)

Ed had better things to do as well so we got stuck riding with freaking Shea screaming the whole way there and back

I agree. However, I rarely want to listen to Yngwie, and if Yngwie's last tour is any indication, neither do most people.

I've always loved his early 80's tone but his style bores me after a few tunes. I just wish he's mix the speedier runs with more slow, phrased licks as when he does them they're quite good.

Plus the singers he's had didn't do the songs any favors, but that was sword and sorcery in the 80's for ya!

I expect better from a Hamer player :P

Naaaaaaaaa....no Yngwie fanboy here but just calling it the way it is, he tore my boy Vai a new one during the 2003 G3 jams

Yes, IMO he owned Vai on that G3 tour.
