Yes, IMO he owned Vai on that G3 tour.

Just to show you how much opinions vary, I thought Malmsteen was the best out of the G3 jam and Vai was the worst.

We're saying the same thing.

I know. I really shouldn't have quoted you on that since it wasn't directed at you, but it was to all those who talk about how awful Yngwie is and how he only plays the same thing for 30 seconds over and over again.

Not as bad as the a2m job poor Joe got though

True. But I have never been a fan of Satriani's playing/tone. He's not bad, but he does literally nothing for me. No doubt he's looked like a hack next to anyone else on G3 ever in my mind.

Keep in mind my favorite players are guys like EJ/Clapton/SRV/Hendrix/Gilmour/Page/Beck type guys who have really good finger tone. IMO Satriani does *not* have good finger tone at all.

[puts on flame suit]

Well I agree with them that his songs are limited at best. But we're talking about a guy who is shredding his face off while actually having a lot of feeling and tone. While playing into a really bare bones setup. While I can't say I listen to Yngwie very often AT ALL, there's no denying that he owns shred style playing. There are very few shred guys who I actually find musical. Friedman is definitely one, but I only really like his stuff when its in the context of megadeth.

I'm one of the few who could listen to Yngwie all day and not get bored. I think it has to do with my love for the neo-classical genre he created.

Still, Jason Becker > All

Maybe repetition just doesn't bore you easily.

Look, I appreciate Yngwie's amazing technique and some of his neo-classical melodic ideas and I know everything is subjective anyway, but he gets old quick for me.

FWIW, I think it's the amount of over the top. I don't think he repeats himself any more than any other guy. But when you do everything in 5th gear no matter how hip it may have been it can get old fast.

That said Yngwie's album of cover tunes I can listen to all day long. So, for me it's just that I'm not too keen to listen to what he plays on top of then anything else.

Let's face it, yes he can play fast, yes he can sweep like nobody's business, yes he can spank plenty of players out there, yes he was the first to take it mainstream, yes he knows everything there is to know about music theory, and yes he can play it for you, BUT as others have said, without enough variation it all starts sounding the same, and just runs on, and on, and on, just like this paragraph and this thread. ;)

His BIG EGO is what turns most people off about him.

His early stuff and the cover cd's are great, everything else is just OK to me.

So one day i heard J Coltrane and M Davis and S Henderson.

Since that day no one has ever been able to explain to me why i should listen to I Malmsteen....

 that was my point, IMO GG Is one of the best (or even the best) players at the time, he can play faster AND cleaner than yngwie AND is one of the most creative guitar players around, looks like he can play any technique and he seems to know tons of diferent styles, IMO he is raising the bar

btw: music is not a competition if someone likes neoclassical , good for them

I agree 100%. I misunderstood the point of your post... which if you think about it could have been taken either way...

Huge GG fan here...

personally, i could give a rat's fuk about a players personality. you can either play, or you can't. most of the guys i dig might be junkie, asshole fukwads but you know what?...i don't know them or hang out with them so, at the end of the day, it really doesn't matter.

Hell yeah he has an ego, he was part of the 80s which was one big shred fest and I am sure that he had many heads shaking when they saw him. The dude plays freaking nmv Marshalls like we play Line 6 stuff and nobody touches his vibrato...nobody.

For a guy not being a songwriter he has many albums under his belt.

Granted, he's not Guthrie Govan selling out Tone Merchants, playing the same fucking tunes the last 5 years.... that are intended for the idiots staring at his fingers, thinking how clever to stick all those tricks into one tune....meanwhile the tunes are boring as shit finger excersizes.

Who's around longer? Who will be remembered as somebody who brought something new to the table? Not Guthrie, thats for sure.

I have to agree with Carly...there is something to be said for someone who never followed trends, owned his vision and just does what he wants really ..and makes a damn good living and his highly successful and already consider a Legend. not to bad for a 19 year crazy swede that came here with a pair of jeans and strat prepared to conquer and destroy L.A....and that he did!
