Page said he used to use 8's as a high string.

Eddie used 8s? Damn, I did not know that. I will say that imo part of SRV's tone were those guidewires he used for strings

That's another myth that needs an answer, did they go up or down on voltage. Most will say they went down to cause more power amp distortion. But who really knows with that camp?

The electric guitar's tone isn't that important...it's mostly the amp that gets the tone.

it is mostly the amp though (at least if you take extreme examples, say a recto and then a fender twin).

guitar is obviously important too, of course.

EDIT: i think the problem with most of these myths is, that someone who doesn't know too much about guitar will read a post with mine, with several qualifying factors (such as "if you take extreme examples", or "guitar is important too"), and will then repeat my post without the qualifying factors, as gospel.

great sounding guitar + great sounding amp + great sound speakers/cab =

I don't think chasing just amps is going to land you your 'ideal' tone...the guitar and cab must be highly thought about/searched too.

Actually your tone begins with the guitar, so IMO it's the most critical piece.

A dead guitar will stop a great amp and cab in it's tracks ;)

Judging by my guitars to amps ratio, I agree

But definitely the amp/speakers play a HUGE role. And I do agree that a crappy guitar into a great amp sounds better than vice versa. I just don't have any interest in playing a crap amp or guitar though :p

Past a certain point, "good" is subjective though. A crap guitar through a bruno cowtipper (or other boutique clean up) vs. a great guitar through a good silverface fender? I'm going with the latter!!! :D

That's why I recently bought the EBMM Sil...I was in a music store and was trying a lot of different guitars with the new Mesa Express 1x12 combo...the Sil I tried made all the other high priced guitars (ibanez, fender gibson...)I tried through the Mesa sound not very good at all. It reminded me how important the guitar is and how I couldn't leave the store without putting some money down on that guitar to hold it.

...and I went in there with no intention of buying a guitar dammit.
