I don't think chasing just amps is going to land you your 'ideal' tone...the guitar and cab must be highly thought about/searched too.
Actually your tone begins with the guitar, so IMO it's the most critical piece.

A dead guitar will stop a great amp and cab in it's tracks
Oh, i agree wholeheartedly, the guitar is extremely important, but the amount of people you see putting a gibson les paul (or paul reed smith, or similar) through a marshall mg10 is just criminal.
Obviously it's an extreme, but i've seen it happen before.
And a heck of a lot of people with a guitar that most would consider decent, at least, (say $500-$700), who want to buy a new $2000 guitar before upgrading their $50 solid state practice amp, is also criminal.
Obviously once you have the kickass amp, you want to look into great guitars too.
I'm not suggesting you run a botton of the range squier/westfield through a dumble or trainwreck, lol. But if you have a $500 guitar and a cheapo practice amp, you'll notice a much better improvement, IMO, upgrading your amp than your guitar- as long as you get on with your current guitar, obviously.
Obviously everything in the chain is important, to an extent. But amp seems to be the most-forgotten one (ok, maybe speakers, but i kind of count speakers in with the amp), and it's one of the, if not the, single most important thing. Suggesting "get a new amp" all the time is kind of a backlash against that, lol.
EDIT: also, i realise that a good amp will let the natural guitar tone through more- so if you go with the new amp first, it may increase your GAS for a new guitar(s) too!

Yup that sounds like it needs potting! If it already had been potted, the wax potting may have broken causing it to squeel. I would get a tech to have a quick look and to let you know wether it needs re potting or not.
+1
if it's still under warranty, your pickup manufacturer should repot it too, i think.
also, check the pickup isn't loose in the guitar- the pickup mounting screws rattling might also cause microphonics...

Past a certain point, "good" is subjective though. A crap guitar through a bruno cowtipper (or other boutique clean up) vs. a great guitar through a good silverface fender? I'm going with the latter!!!
agreed. to be fair, i'm going by extremes. on some other forums, guys think a bc rich will make them sound br00talz metalz through their $50 marshall mg.
wow, mega post. sorry!
oh yeah, agreed on the bolt-on thing too, some people think bolt-ons automatically = crap, which is BS.
