i love you bro bro! nice work!

unflappable!

tis true vh is more about poundcake nonsense than i'm the one fury these days, but homeslice parted the shred red sea so he'll always be the icon.

yjm is cool because he lost the greasy chinned distended bowel look in favor of muttonchops, and he also hit the scene like a meteor and innovated.

i thought vai w/ roth live at the forum on EAS tour was brilliant, particularly because i was in the nosebleeds and couldn't *see* vai worth squat, and even at that roth IS the showman and nobody is gonna upstage him at that game, and sure his label is a great thing

but i swear you are the only reason i still give vai half a chance, because vai never set himself up on musical merit, just quirky melody, tricks and showoff gimmicks, so his musical *legacy* will be how far he divebombed with his tongue while he wiggled his fingers over the neck like a magician and humped the air towards an army of 13 year old boys, ala don ho.

and perhaps if he manages to hear enough of the complaints, like eddie and the HC evh photoshop thread, he may just shed the fruitcup wizardry and huck down a musical masterpiece.
i just think he needs to collaborate with someone because if he hasn't done it by now....

I have studied the ways of the Mentoneman when it comes to superior retorts :D

Don Ho is dead and you are still nailing him

blue powder is the only thing i'd ever point to as a piece of music by vai that was killer from beginning to end. i was blown away by that little black soundpage pullout from guitar player magazine, which is where he debuted that song, as a demo for a carvin amp!
Don't forget about "For the Love of God" or "Tender Surrender", both of these tracks show Vai at some of his best.

Via is great, monster player etc... but I can't stand his style, tone, etc...I guess its his general pussyness that bugs the shit outta me !

First heard him when Flexable came out - was like ok - another EVH with a twist havent heard a thing from him since sept for a youtube vid here n there...yea I was using EVH as a benchmark and still do alot - gotta problem wjth that ?

no offence ;)

Mentoneman and I have a friendly on-going dispute over Vai's quicks, EVH WAS my hero before his passion and skills pasted away.

That said I here nothing in common with Ed and Vai.

In the Flexable album to my ears I heard Ed all over it -now it a was a biased decesion nonetheless :D

I now hold Ed in a below average redard until he actually does something viable - no pun intented

The other songs I heard was the tender surrender and for the love and those are great songs but can't even look at via without thinking he must of just been back stage with a double ended romeo warming up ;)

Great song and very nice solo! Vai did such a great job with Whitesnake but at the moment I like Sykes' and Aldrich's playing more for WS's music. It changes monthly though.

Of course it owns!:D

Last few months I've been into more bluesy players such as Sykes, Marcello, Norum, Aldrich, Stevens, Moore etc.

other than always enjoying busting digijam's chops about the vai thing :D

vai always adds this overt silliness to everything he does, from posing to dress to whammy wah pitch shifted hungarian minor scales, under the umbrella of "exotic", or maybe just a really bad sense of musical humor, which makes me totally uninterested in what he has to offer.

he did it to alcatrazz as well as whitesnake...his sense of odd timing and using the vibrato bar to steer melody is just so cheap and gimmicky in his hands

and here's the big newsflash:

he gyrates as if he has something to offer women (at least i hope he is intending that nonsense for women) and bottom line is he looks more like a forbidden byproduct of dracula/tiny tim/henry kissenger's huffrag-fueled man love summit, consumated in the mud of a mexican outhouse.

I respect his chops as a guitar player, but you just summed up my feelings concerning Vai to absolute PERFECTION!! :D

i saw that show/tour...and vai in whitesnake was like gluing a boner on the mona lisa's forehead.

From what I understand that was Di Vinci's original intent but like many of his projects, the painting didn't get finished.

Hey Mentoneman.....here is the guitar used in the vid and is safe inside his vault as we speak :D

I don't own anything that qualifies as a cork sniffer guitar, unless a Wayne Charvel and an Yngwie Strat qualify? Don't you have some Vai poster you need to tack up over you collection of pink Jems? ;)

He's going to put up more Vai posters as soon as he gets his collarbones pierced. :) You know if EVH had gotten his collarbones pierced, half this forum would have collarbone piercing scars. When Vai got his pierced, I took one look at that and thought, what a dork. I just think the guy tries too hard at just about everything. Because of it his stage moves seem contrived, and his playing seems contrived.... it's like Vai thinks "here's the part with some emotional bends with a little vibrato to show I have tons of feel, heres that part where I should do some tapping to show how much better I am at it then Eddie, and I need to put a zany little wacky run in here to show that I have a sense of humor and tons of personality in my playing". He just reminds me of an actor trying to play a role as a guitar hero.

He has stupidly good chops but he sounds like what a guy who camps out for three weeks to see the new Star Wars movie would sound like if he played guitar.

As much as me and Scott bust eachothers chops, I'm still a Vai fan. But all i need from him is Passion and Warfare and Fire Garden.

I do remember years ago he was on Howards Sterns show and he brought a refrigerator sized rig that they didn't let him use, they made him plug into a Rockman, the same thing all the other guests artists would plug into. Wow, he sounded lost. All he did was play a few Led Zep and AC/DC riffs so Howard could just yell over it. I remember thinking, holy crap, he sounds like me.

I like him doing his wierd martian stuff. Just listen to him on the G3 jams when they play over anything resembling a straight rock or blues riff, he sounds lost. But damm, Passion and Warfare is one of my favorite instrumental discs of all time.

Where else am I going to get a scalloped production guitar for $1200....have to bite the bullet on that one

Talk about fanboy though, if I had the money to buy Vai's Mothership months ago I would have :D
