I've been thinking about adding a Marshall to my rig for Iron Maiden style tones, but I'm lost as far as all the different models and such. I'm not going to be buying one anytime soon, but I'd just like to see what some of you guys think is the best Marshall for those kind of tones. JCM800? JMP/Plexi? DSL/TSL?

My favorite Maiden tones are Brave New World and Seventh Son. I don't need it to get any heavier than that, since I have my 5150 for heavy stuff. Also, does anyone know what guitars and amps they used back on Seventh Son?

Well, Maiden's been using JMP-1 preamps for awhile now. I'd try one of those.

I'm pretty sure any of those would pretty much nail maiden.
I am super happy with my 800's.

Go for the rack setup of Somewhere in Time :D
I wanna see Mega' with a fridge-size rack!

Haha!

I've never been too interested in rack stuff, I prefer simple amps for the most part. What kind of shit did they use on Somewhere In Time?

it depends what tone of the guys you want. On the album, adrian used marshall 30th anniversary heads, dave used dsl's, and janick used the jmp-1.

I believe Murray's rhythms on that album were done for the most part on his black strat with a Dimarzio Super Distortion. Smith has always used many different guitars and pickups in the studio, Les Pauls, SGs, Jacksons, Strats, Lado...

Yeah, if I end up picking up a Marshall, I'm definitely going to get a nice Strat to go with it. I really like how smooth the Seventh Son tone is, I want that tone. :D

Well, it will be fun piecing together my own Strat. I've been having fun designing some in that Kisekae thing recently. :D

Oh and I haven't heard back from Ikebe about the Murray Strat.

it needs a humbucker in the bridge definitely though.

Nah, the JB Jr. sounds killer for Maiden tones. The Hot Rail would probably work very well too.

I know they have used hot rails and JBs on some of their later albums

Modding a strat is fun.
I've been modding mine since i got it. It definitively won't appeal to the old school strat crowd. It's now an 80's axe :)
I am still debating the floyd or wilkinson.

Does Ikebe normally take this long?

Having been a floyd user for the past 10 years and recently trying out some wilkinsons, the wilkinsons feel much smoother to me. A perfectly setup floyd stays in tune well, but they have so many moving parts that can crap out and throw the system out of whack.

My Caparison already has a floyd, so i am aiming towards the Wilkinson right now.
That way, i have both :)

Not usually. They normally reply within a day or two. Oh well, I can't afford that thing anyways. :aww:

IMHO, Iron Maiden tones took a dump after the Powerslave album. They used Gallien Kruegers on Somewhere In Time, you can easily tell because they sound too processed. I'm not sure exactly what they used on Seventh Son, but it doesn't sound like a straight Marshall. I hear some stereo chorus on the guitars which i can't stand.

I know they did use JMP's at some point, probably around the Seventh Son era. If you wanted the tone from the first album on up to Powerslave i would say a JCM800 with a boost pedal. For albums after that probably a JMP and a multi effects processor.

I remember there was some JMP 50 watt head on Ebay last year that was supposedly built for Maiden. The guy was asking like $8000 for it.

I know those JMP's are loud, but do the ones with a master volume sound alright at moderate volume?
