Talk about fanboy though, if I had the money to buy Vai's Mothership months ago I would have :D

I would have bought that too. That would have been killer. Then I would have had an exorcism performed so there were no more wacky, zany musical vibes floating around in there to influence me. Then I could have used that studio to record some stuff that people would never debate on the internet whether it sucked or not. It would have been unanimous that it sucked.

I like beating on Scott about Vai too, although Pat is really all we need to state our case. Seriously, me saying Vai sucks is like me saying Michael Jordan sucked.

He's going to put up more Vai posters as soon as he gets his collarbones pierced. :) You know if EVH had gotten his collarbones pierced, half this forum would have collarbone piercing scars. When Vai got his pierced, I took one look at that and thought, what a dork. I just think the guy tries too hard at just about everything. Because of it his stage moves seem contrived, and his playing seems contrived.... it's like Vai thinks "here's the part with some emotional bends with a little vibrato to show I have tons of feel, heres that part where I should do some tapping to show how much better I am at it then Eddie, and I need to put a zany little wacky run in here to show that I have a sense of humor and tons of personality in my playing". He just reminds me of an actor trying to play a role as a guitar hero.

He has stupidly good chops but he sounds like what a guy who camps out for three weeks to see the new Star Wars movie would sound like if he played guitar.

TOTALLY!!!! the extreme poser who just happens to be able to play well!
on one hand he acts like he's so emotional and sensitive, and on the other hand his whole personality and taste is so shallow

+elevendybillion to your insight

AND another thing... :D

he needs to get away from the "self producer" mentality and let the reality of a guy with a solid track record and golden ears rip him a new one for being such a freakin 'mo!

i'd LOVE to see simon knock the ego right out of him.

Steve Vai is one of the best guitarists alive today, bar none--guy is a genius. Another underated genius is Mike Keneally. No one comes close to having the fabulous stage presence of Steve Vai. He has all the right moves and the playing ability to back it up. He's a players player and a super nice under-assuming guy off stage. The guys (players) like him-Ive seen him at l-east a dozen times, maybe more and there are never any females in the house (maybe one or two stragglers there with their boyfriends).

Video sucked pickle chunks though--I hate when they cant sync the video with the audio. if anything is cheap, its the engineering of the shit video.

Pat....you mean the guy that planted himself in the front and would not leave that spot if someone yelled bomb waiting for mr neon guitar himself Paul Gilbert looking like school girl who was just asked to the prom by the HS quaterback....that Pat  :D

That was one freaking cool night for me Pat, at last seeing Paul Gilbert and at the Viper

That studio put out this solo :D The whole album was tracked there guitar wise. I was looking at the pictures and it was pretty mello in there, china hutch and all and nothing what I thought it would have been. I should have bought that sucker...you guys would have been banging my door down just to light up that place with metal

It is tough getting grilled by you two, you guys can bring it WAY better than I and have past history during the good old days.....I have nothing but my posters

i'm not really out to dissuade people from liking vai and his music, and i'm sure he's a great chap,
but until he changes his stage persona and approach, *i'll* pass

What stage persona??? The guy is on stage to entertain. And that is exactly what he does. He is cordial to his audience and gives them what they want. Again I ask; would you rather he stand like a statue? Derek Trucks comes to mind when I say the word *statue*. Trucks is in a coma on stage--great slide player though--Him and Jeff Beck are the best slide players alive today.

Would you prefer he stand like a statue???? Its all part of the game. I love Yngwies KICKS!!!!

it worked back in the day when he was young and bruce lee sleek,
but on the G3 video i kept waiting for a potato to roll out of his pant leg or the seat of his pants to rip.

dude was packing the LB's back then--that swedish cinnabun advocate's pinky weighed as much as my left leg by the looks of that video.

but even as rotundly oompa as yjm became,

simply peruse that youtube spoof video of vai where someone substitutes nonsense for the real audio track and vai comes off fruitier than a kumquat.

unwatchably

Kidding aside, this solo is very close to the vibe you bring sometimes...just has that sexy groove working like your work :)

Scott...you are already on my good side...no need to butter me up anymore. Besides, I now play soft rock music only.

I like this song and like Vai's solo on it a lot...very soft rockish.

I used to be a big Vai fan...I still say Eat 'em and Smile is his very best work.
DLR seems to have a way of bringing that out of the guitar players he works with I guess.
