I have no legato skills at all, all of my time has been alt picking and my instructor gave me some legato exercises during the lesson and man it was like hitting a brick wall. My pinky right now is just not up to snuff strenght wise to do clean hammer-on pull offs right now.

This just compounds my thoughts about jamming with guys far better than you to push you along.

Playing/jamming with anyone who is more proficient than your personal weak areas (playing wise) can do nothing but great good for your playing except a little ego bruising

keep on keepin' on!

Don't worry, we never get to that point where we like our own playing. :D

I'm kinda in the same boat. I been working on Steve Morse & Yngwie licks far too long. Cool thing is realizing what to work on and then start the woodshedding :) What really kills me is guys like Lynch who have awesome legato and then mix in some alt picking stuff. I have a real hard time mixing them up.

+1

I'm 39 and my vibrato is almost partially acceptable. I should have started working on it 25 years earlier.

No worries, I have a lesson on the 23rd and plan on showing some improvement

Dude, That's what he is there for.. To kick your ass on the things you need work on!! No sense playing what you know.... (done that for the last 20 year lol :D)

That said, there is no need to thank me at all!! Im just glad that we get a chance to learn from him. I just had a great lesson and picked it up quicker then I thought because Terry pushed me in the right direction!! We just did a weird rhythm / tapping thing that went from 7/8 to 7/8 to 10/8 :D Something that I would never ever would have done had he not showed me. If that wasn't enough he showed so much more. I have lots to work on!! We also did the 5 over 7 lick. I played in 5's and he played in 7 and every 4th pass, we wound up on the 1 together... WTF!!!!! :hys:

Well I'm a left playing righty [insert Shea saying "TRAITORZ!!!" here] so my legato has always been stronger than my alt picking (which I'm working on right now).

Polyrhythmically speaking 5 and 7 would meet every 5th of the 7, or 7th pass of the 5. :)

Let me guess...mostly when using a pattern that involves the ring finger as well?
If so, instead of doing the Paul Gilber index, ring, pinky fingering try the Shawn Lane work around, index, middle pinky...

I'm the same, I started playing an acoustic upside down and my first guitar teacher bascially forced me to play right handed  :)

Funny stuff, we traveled a total of 140 miles towards White PLains and we spoke for 2 minutes

Here is the thing that is going to kill me.......I have always been a 1-2-4 finger user during 3 finger scales but for what he gave me for Legato I want to use 1-3-4 and he spotted right away that i was conflicted and have to choose one way or another. I am screwed :D I use my pinky for scales and chords but for hammer on pull-offs I have much work.

7&5???? No thanks

On another note I sold my SL-1 so I just ordered my new PC butt loaded

Why would you want it to be 1-3-4 fingering?

If so, instead of doing the Paul Gilber index, ring, pinky fingering try the Shawn Lane work around, index, middle pinky...

Iv always done it the Shawn Lane way, (index, middle, pinky) but recently i stumbled across licks that i couldnt do so easy via that method. So iv started working on index ring pinky just to strengthen up my technique on my ring and pinky together.

It was difficult at first and felt very uncomfortable and un-natural, but after a couple months i almost have it down now :) So i can comfortably do both methods!

Come on Scott! You big wus! If I can play legato ANYONE can. Just takes a bit of practice. You will get it! I promise!

I would LOVE to find a great instructor around here!

7-9-11....7-11-7-9-11-9-7 Low E to A and this progresses up the range.

Funny but you have me backwards, I use Index, middle, pinky but wanted to go Gilbert for some reason. So now I may have alt picking mode and Legato mode....I am screwed.

Why would you want it to be 1-3-4 fingering?

Not sure, it just wanted to flow that way if it makes sense. I do have a strong trill with my ring finger so I am thinking that is it.

I know I have to figure one way or the other or I will be a mess.
