Man... I just heard Chris Cornell do a live acoustic version of "Black Hole Sun" live in Howard Stern's studio... Incredible vocal performance. I lterally got chills listening to him sing it. Is there a more expressive vocalist that came out of the whole grunge thing? I think not...

Anybody else hear it? Amazing performance IMO...

I have mixed feelings about him. When he is on..... he is on and I get the Total Chills but when he goes into that monotone drone where it sounds like he is not opening up his mouth wide enough, it ruins it for me.

I never really got into Soundgarden, or any other "grunge" bands, but I must admit that CC can sing, and has some monster chops to match.

That's cool and I know what you mean to an extent...

Whaddaya think of the Temple of the Dog stuff? Like "Hunger Strike"? Just amazing IMO...

I just missed it, heard the rest of the interview and a track off his new album. I dig Cornell big time though.

One of my all time fav's is the acoustic version of "Like Suicide". Awesome stuff there!

I dig it!! I actually love him as a vocalist but I just don't like it when he sings monotone. I think some of the songs that he sang on audioslave features the marble mouth syndrome I was talking abou :hys:

agreed... When CC is on, its awe inspiring, when hes off, its disappointing to say the least...

Another guy from the same era/genre( though I never considered them Grunge) was Layne Staley... That guys vocals blew me away...

His recent performances (post audioslave) seem to be a lot more consistent than in the past. I read somewhere he may have had ployps removed recently and that that was why he's been kicking so much ass lately. In the past he's been very hit or miss live, IMO. Sometimes wildly out of tune and/or kind of going through the motions like gainfreak said. I think a lot of that was from his previous bands playing too loud for him to sing how he does in the studio. With his new solo band they seem a lot more controlled etc. Lots of stuff on youtube, check out his much more music performance, pretty dead on, IMO. When he's on, there's definitely few guys out there who can touch him. As far as grunge guys though, Eddie Vedder is *very* consistenly good live, btw. Surprised the hell out of me when I saw them live, he was awesome.

Agreed, I love Layne Staley as well, although he is a bit too melodramatic, scary man for me sometimes... and frankly, I think Eddie Vedder was amazing as well although he became sonewhat of a caricature because of the plethora of imitators.

There is just something so raw about Cornell that really strikes a chord with me though... In fact, the cracking you hear in his voice in live performances and the seeming struggle he has to get some of the notes out, just add to the expressiveness to me, even though they are clearly just imperfections...

Go to this link and scroll down the left side of the screen looking for Cornell.

Some cool stuff there.

I'm a long time CC fan. Outshined was the song that turned me onto him and from there I couldnt get enough.

Listening to him these days makes me wish he still had the pipes he had in 94, but what are you gonna do? Those songs HAVE GOT TO take a toll on him... nevermind the ciggies and whatever it is he takes that makes him skinnier than an Ethiopian skeleton.

The wife and I danced to "All Night Thing" at our wedding. I didnt tell her the song was about banging groupies... she just like the chorus so I snuck that by her.

Yeah, I'm a fan.

Yup - he was my favorite back in '92 when the whole thing broke... and I love the viciousness of the live versions of "Animal" I heard back then...

I actually think their recent self titled album kicks ass, btw if you haven't heard it.

I actually saw Soundgarden open for Megadeth way back... and Alice in Chains opening up for Van Halen on the F.U.C.K. tour...

Sheesh... talk about dichotomies...

I should check it out. Really I lost track of Pearl Jam after the second CD. I liked a few things off that one, but they kinda lost me after that. It was really "Ten" that did it for me and they started to change in a way that wasn't my cup of tea... Of course, the over the top 80s 'verb all over "Ten" sounds ridiculous now. They oughtta remix it with less... would be cool...

Agreed... I love his vocals on Hunger Strike, they go right through ya... Staley had this certain something that just did it for me everytime.. The first time that I saw him was at place on Long Island called Sundance and they were opening up for Extreme who had just released Pornografitti. They had just released Facelift and As incredible as Extreme was, AIC kinda out classed them... That awa an amazing show to say the least...

On another note, it was so friggin crowded that I couldnt get to the bathroom and pissed on a guys leg by mistake..

I hear you about the direction they took being kinda meh. I think the first two albums (ten and vs.) are really strong, and then like I said the self titled one recently rocks pretty hard too. I like their other albums too to varying extents though. Definitely a lot of verb on 10 though haha.

I dig Chris a lot. I think he's evolved incredibly well as a volcalist. I still dig this stuff, though:
