The tone I love is a early Van Halen tone which is alot of Amp tone and amp modding/tricks. But I need to know how these speakers sound. Are they tighter lows, less brittle highs, a more scooped mid, etc.....

Hey Wally, welcome to the board!

If you love early Van Halen tone, i would go with the greenbacks!! I have a modded Marshall that i use with a 4x12 cab with greenbacks, and i can get very close to Ed's sound. I think you would really love them!

Welcome to the forum  :oc18:

Thats one thing I am considering, I just have never heard a cab with Alnico Blues or Golds. That is the real basis of my question.

Have you heard the new Greenbacks compared to the originals. I have only heard the originals.

Thanx for the welcome!

I have the new Greenbacks in that cab i mentioned. They sound awesome, they still have that woody character to them that the originals have! The top end is sweet on them, and the bottom end is thick!

The Celestion Alnico blues are a more british, vintage sound. They are in the Vox AC30 Reissues i believe! For what you are after, id pick the greenback over the Alnicos!

I have played Celestions for nearly 3 decades now...
The V30 has always been my go to speaker when it comes to close miking. In the room I always preferred Greenies.
Recently I loaded one of my 2x12s with Golds since Blues are way underrated for my needs. I haven't used anything but the cab with the Golds since. The detail is great, the upper mids are very Brititsh. And if I could only have one cab it'd be this.
As to the comparison of the other speakers...

Cool, sounds like the Greenie reissues for me maybe

First off... Welcome!

Second... If I were you, I would call up your local music stores and ask them if the have a Marshall cab loaded with the Greenbacks. (both my local sam ash and GC have them)
If they do, I suggest you take your own amp down to the store and try the cab for yourself with your own gear (done this many times!!)The good news is that Marshall has also come out with their heritage cabs, so if you are lucky, you might get to hear a cab loaded with the Hendrix Greenback clones or a heritage g12h30. I think it easier now more then ever to find a cab that has different speakers loaded in it. Years ago all you had were g12t75's or v30's and thats it!! ;)

Hi,
Regardless of any rumors, Ed only used Greenbacks and still does. I've been to his house several times over the last year working on the 5150III and he confirmed this while lighting my cig for me. Even more cool....he used the same Greenie loaded 4x12 to record the keyboards for "Jump" and a host of many other things (besides guitar). The new 5150III has a cool little twist on the speaker...you'll see!

Cheers,
Rick
