Channel 3, EMG81, marshall cabinet, SM58, bedroomvolume.

At the end you can even hear the strings. No bassguitar.
Was just a simple riff with (obvious) some example vocals for a new song. Someone put drums (DFHS) on it.

The EMG's left the building, now JB's.

Very well recorded especially for bedroom volume and nice rhythm playing too.

There is a hole in the black speakercloth of my cabinet, i put the SM58 in there. Talk about close miking. Just moved it around till it sounded right.

Have to say that the VH4 sounds better crancked up! Then it starts to growl

I know and I love the fact that it responds differently according to guitar. You can get pretty classic and mean sounds out of it.

can I ask what power tubes you have in your VH4 when you recorded this clip?

Cheers,

John

JJ EL34L

But this was on bedroomlevel, at "normal" level the distortion becomes much more grity, more raw.

I've always played my Mesa's with 6L6, so the EL34 thing is kinda new to me. My Marshalls were EL34, but that was ages ago.

Would like to hear it with 6L6, but i'm happy the way it sound now.
Don't fix it when..........

Peter, is that a good or a bad thing?

Two weeks ago we played at a festival. Guitarplayer in the band before us had a 2-channel Dual Recto. We watched him and his USA Jackson (EMG81) while he was soundchecking. Talked to him about his beautiful guitar. Ha saw my VH4 backstage and said he was curious about it's sound.

Later he watches us soundcheck. We plugged in a Gibson Les Paul Studio (498T pickup) and did some palmmutes and chords.
The Recto-guitarplayer;" Woooaah, well i can't compete with that!!"

Always nice to hear
:D

For this recording? Probably more mid en less bass than normal.
Think bas at 10 Clock, mid at 12Clock, treble at 2 Clock.

I never use "Deep", cause its so low my Marshall speakers wont be able to handle it. It's tighter this way, leave the sublows to the bassplayer.

I will try to record more this week with Seymour Duncans JB in the guitar.
And no drums. The big drums also do a lot to the sound, but they show how well the VH4 fitts fat drumsounds.

Now i wished i didn't record the vocals :scared:

I recorded them throug a headphone as a mike, really. And vocals were in whisper-mode, not the real deal.

nice clip. but did you notice a slight ring at the end of each phrase or staccato note? i had that same problem for a while and it drove me mad. it turns out the strings up at the head-stock of my explorer were acting like sympathetic strings. i have even heard this on albums.
a simple band of tape solved the problem
again, nice clip and the tone was great

What you hear is actually the acoustic strings, like i said at bedroomlevel.

I've been using the tip (tape on strings) for years now. Even on tremelostrings in the back, i got my trem locked.
