I don't sell gear....unless there is some drastic reason. Like when I needed to raise capitol for a down payment on a house kinda deal.

how the amp responds = tone
Not by a long shot. It's a contributing factor at best. Case in point Guytron GT 100...fastic sound. But after the initial attack when instead of just ramping up to the decay there was a squiggle in there that killed the feel on the right hand for me. After totally changing the filter it finally felt right to me. Sounded exactly the same.

Yeah but that's style. But tell you what when you hear say a Brian May solo in the car next to you a a stop light you know it's Brian May. Now that shit IS money!
I'm thinking style (such a broad huge thing...vibrato, bends, chording, picking...) means way more than the gear...but of course we don't want to hear bad sounding gear either. ;)

Jeff Beck's tones in the 70's are not something I shoot for, but damn I love those albums anyway.

You need to raise the building in Washington, D.C. where the Congress of the United States meets for a down payment on a house? :D

I have this thing were 2 or 3 amps is all I should keep at any given time...I feel like if I'm not using it often, it probably should go...I've regretted that a few times.

Totally agree. I do happen that tone is very important. But not from the gear aspect but the finger end of things.

See I like to have a pile of gear. When, not if but when I get bored with something I move on to something else and then get back to something else when I tired of that. This way I don't do that revolving buy and sell dance I see so much on various boards.

I'm not snuffing a great sounding rig, that is heaven. But set up a rig and pass a guitar around to 5 different guitar players. In general...one guy will get a better tone than the rest only by the way he plays...I know you know that, just had another thought of how to explain it. ;)

I do know that, and I have tried that. I don't know whether I agree so much on "better" since that's pretty much a subjective matter.

Years ago I was using this german guitar and hung out at their office and a customer came in to try his new guitar they just finished and he was really into Steve Morse. He grabbed the guitar plugged it into the amp and sounde pretty uhem...unpleasent to me.
So he starts complaing that the guitar is shit, etc.. hands it to me and stays here try this it's no good. Plugged in and sounded killer enough for me to buy it. :)

I was about to type that. :D

Better not to chase but you can't help but be influenced by others. When somebody says I sound like Clapton or Knopler I wish I didn't cause I want to be just me. It's still a compliment no doubt. The ones that stand out are the ones who work it out and make it thier own so to speak.

You just buy. :D
I couldn't afford to keep all kinds of gear.

I'm guessing I'm a hellalot older than you as well. As in more disposable income?
When used to do this for a living I couldn't afford the gear I have now.

That is hard to get...your own sound...since we began guitar usually as mimics.

So if there is one point I'd really like to make today going off of the thread title "chasing guys tones..."

Don't...find your own. :)

Of course the person playing affects the tone, but so does the gear. You're going to sound more like old Metallica through a Mesa Mark series amp rather than a 5150 or a Bogner XTC for example.

Bullshit!
