Nice sounding amp. I think he used to much effects on his EVH licks though.
I thought the channel 2 sounded nice and is the closest to the Eddie sound of old.

I just got a 5150 III half-stack on friday. Happy to report that this amp kicks all kinds of ass!! As many have already said, the EVH cab is crucial to getting that tone. I have two Bogner cabs which sound good with the 5150...but the EVH cab just smokes with this head (and with my other amps as well). The clean can stay totally clean but also can be pushed to break up in a very usable way. The second and third channels both sound very raw and stay very clear even with gain dimed. Mine came with a combo of Sovtek 12ax7WCs (slots 1 & 5), EH (slots 2,3,4,6) and LPS (slots 7,8) pre-amp tubes and Sovtek 6L6 WXT power tubes......

I do not get why Eddie would continue to use 6L6s for the power section if the designer was trying to create Eddie's tone of old

I hear alot of conflicting reports on the clean channel, it would be nice to hear someone run through the knobs on the clean channel with a medium output humbucker so I could some sort of idea

To keep the 5150 clean channel very clean, you have to keep the gain around 9 o'clock. It starts to break up around 11 o'clock or so. Plenty of headroom...at least with my guitars (Axis, LP)....

I think its because Eddie wants a combination of his newer sound and then a lead channel with more gain and he has stopped using powertube distortion . I don't think el34's can handle 6 gain stages on the lead channel lol
. In the article, he said that 6l6's are more reliable then th e34's.

I completely agree about the clean on the demo.
The clean I dialed in was definitely above average. The demo made the cleans sound a lot like my Bogner 101B's clean channel actually...which I'd put at slightly below average.
To my ears, the one I played in person sounded much better than the Guitar World demo is conveying. I'm not trying to be one of those, "you have to hear it in person" guys, but the first thing I thought of when I heard the GW demo was that people were going to crawl out of the woodwork to slam it. I don't personally care for the settings the guy used, but it's cool to see some people dig it. Like the article says, the tone controls are extremely dynamic.Superunknown":02794 said:

It seems to me that the dude in that video had the clean channel dialed in kind of how EVH likes his clean tones. I could be wrong though, I'm no EVH expert, but I thought he liked a little bit of grit to his cleans like that?

The only thing that seemed like a red flag to me (besides that) was the "ability for the amp to clean up with the guitar's volume control". I don't think he demonstrated that at all; it sounded like any of a number of high gain amps with a guitar's volume backed off...nothing special in that regard at all. (Flame suit on.)

Thats just the thing though... i doubt the clean channel sucks that bad to be honest. I think the clean could sound nice with lower output single coils. Thats one of the most common things that people forget about when demoing clean channels, the actual pickups in the guitar are a huge factor!

With the way the amp is designed (3 totally seperate channels into the power amp) you could do better by getting the Randall RM4 and a good tube power amp or the Randall RM100 head. That way you could load the modules you like for clean, crunch and solo. Probably would be cheaper too.
