Hey, I'm bringing this over from the HC forums in case anyone's interested...

I did a quick head-to-head. Original 5150 vs Mk. III. The chain on both clips goes Peavey Wolfgang>>>Amp>>>Mesa Recto cab>>>SM57>>>M-Audio Mobile Pre. Again, it's just a rough take, no effects. Both on the lead channels. My mic actually moved between clips and I couldn't find the sweet spot for the Fender 5150 clip, as I did that one second. :mad:

Anyway, enough with the excuses...enjoy for now...there's more to come.

Peavey 5150

The settings on both are as follows (both by # indicators, not o'clock):

Peavey:

Pre 5
Low 6
Mid 2

I still need a little time to fine tune the 5150 III I think, but the different mic placing changed the character of the amp slightly. I will say this, it's a smoother, much clearer amp at higher volumes. Harmonics and sustain are out of this world. It's also extremely dynamic so when you pick softly it cleans up slightly and gets softer, and when you really dig in the 5150 III captures that aggressive sound unlike any other amp I have used. I wish all of you could hear it in person.

It improves on the original 5150 in every aspect to me...everything I wished the original 5150 could do this amp does, and with no frills! The clean channel is warm and pristine as long as one runs the Vol high and uses the Gain control for volume adjustment. The crunch is big, tight, and responsive...it takes boosts REAL well, I just started having fun with this channel! Lead can, of course, get into the same over the top realm of distorted madness the original was known for. I'm just very happy with my purchase; this one's a keeper.

Also, I'm not discrediting the original in any way. Until now it was my go to amp for a long time, it just has it's short commings when put up against this monster. But I will say this, the Peavey is still more aggressive and raw sounding...so if you're playing straight up metal, there's no need to switch.
 
I got it from the GC in Arlington Heights, IL on the 6/28. Also got to demo the $25k Frankenstrat though it...it was fun! I told the sales guy that it was the most expensive piece of shit guitar I've ever played through. :lol: It played really well though, I'll give it that.
 
The III sounds pretty good IMO...I would actually like to check one out (which I can not say for the previous iterations)

KSE clip, nice! It sounds thick, but it also sounds a little unsaturated. Definitely has room for tweaking, I'll be sure to check it out, but never afford it. :D
 
sounds great but alas I just bought a JVM so Ill be sitting this one out .

but can't a 5150 get REALLY close to a 5150 III with a little help of a graphic eq and a BBE sonic max ??


maybe its my speakers but that what I'm hearing in all the new 5150 III
clips

Maybe it'll make it sound bigger, but it can't touch the dynamics and smooth lead sound this amp produces...and I love my Peavey 5150. :thumbsup:

I only had the gain up halfway on the 2nd channel. I can definately make that channel saturate, but nowhere near the 3rd channel.

Thanks for all positive feedback guys! If anyone wants to hear a certain tone in a short clip, I'll do my best to make it happen.
