Started when I was 25 or 26...my last year or so in the Navy stationed in Sicily renting a house from some Italians...right on the sea..... no TV to watch...so a great time to start hacking at the guitar. Which I continue to do...

Interesting, I did the same thing from 92 to 98. I never "quit," but I just didn't pick it up.
LOL!! I remember talking about it with you awhile ago Bob. I have no idea why either and no matter how much I think about it, I cant seem to come up with a reason. I was working an incredible amount during those years( almost 100 hours a week!!!!) and that may have had something to do with it....

I was and am a completely different player due to that gap. Better and worse in many ways...

For both Kage and Bob,

How hard was the transition back into playing? How much did you have to relearn, and how much came right back for you? I basically took a year and a half off when I started grad school (although I still hung around the boards in my free time at the lab) and I am finding in some things that came very difficult to me are easier to learn now. Still don`t have as much time to devote to it as I did before grad school, but I can at least play for a few hours a week now.

Oh and to the original topic, started when I was 13 and am now 25.

It was both refreshing and frustrating for me Jesse. Before the Lay off, I had some pretty ferocious picking chops (IMHO of course) and they definitely werent there when I came back. Since Ive always been a pattern and ear player , it wasnt like I flat out forgot where to go but I had to refamiliarize my ears and fingers and I just ended up sounding and playing very differently than I did pre layoff...

Before the layoff, I used to be able to squeeze at least an hour or so a day and for the most part, thats about all I can get in on a weekly basis since I came back. Now that Im back in a band, thats gone up a bit but I would like to be able to devote more time to personal growth and bettering myself on the instrument.

To be honest Jesse, you , me and anyone can find the time , it all comes down to regimentation and proper time management, something that I havent been to good with but have been making a concerted effort to impliment lately...

Good luck Bro!!!

My short answer would be that it was very difficult getting the mechanics back, but I somehow ended up a more matured player when it comes to feel now that I've gotten much of the technique back (keep in mind though that I don't really practice so it can only get so good).

I've heard the "it's just like riding a bike, you'll get right back on" so many times it makes me dizzy, but in my experience, it was a tough, frustrating road for a couple years once I started again.

I started in 1988. I was 14. So I guess that adds up to 19 years of play now.... wow! I should be so much better than I am... lol!

I started on drums when I was 10 or so. Got tired of it and finally heard Van Halen when I was like 16. I then taught myself piano/keyboards and then taught myself guitar by the time I was around 18. I really wish I had started earlier and took lessons. I don't have really good technique...I guess I kinda made my own to work for me. Also, I cut my left ring finger when I was 18 and that finger still hurts when I get a string in between the scar. OUCH

I was 14 when I started....I wanted to much earlier, but could'nt convince my parents till I beat them down for a few years!

I had a similar experience. I tried Trumpet and Sax when I was in elementary school, so when I told my parents I wanted to play guitar (I was about 12) they told me I would have to buy my own guitar. It took a while to get the money together for that, so I didn't start for another couple/few years. Once I stuck with it my mom saw I was enjoying it and bought me my first amp, a Fender Super Reverb.

Similar situation for me, I played clarinet and saxiphone in elementary school first :)

started when i was 17, ill be 19 in september, people ive met who have been playing for 10+ years say im better than them. i really dont find the instrument that hard or anything, its just with a metronome and a thirst for knowledge you can get awesome REAL FAST.

I take 3 guitar lessons a week also. It helps when youve had 5 great teachers, you soak it in better and get different outlooks on the instrument(1 teacher is the lead guitarist for DAATH, emil werstler, another was an old dude into classic rock, another was a big time blues player, another is an insane jazz guitarist, and the last one is a straight up 80s shred head all the way down to the scalloped fretboards and purple guitars.).

im not trying to sound arrogant if im coming off that way, ill be the first to say i suck. i just dont think its that hard to get into the instrument. scales and modes came easy, same with chords and theory and anything else related to the instrument.

i just got into shredding real soon and just started using a metronome and killed my social life, and bam! you get mad chops. playing from 3 in the afternoon after school till 1-2 in the morning every day helps a lot also. i dont think years of playing has much to do with it, of course it never hurts, i think of it more as hours of playing instead of years.

ive played the least probably of all the ppl on here, and a lot of you guys are still better than me in my opinion, ive matured out of the shredding thing, i still think its a phase you need to go thru to get your technique up, im focusing more on melody now.

my teachers throw around the word prodigy but i hate that, it sounds gay, makes me think of some little japanese kid that kills everyone at the viola or something.

Bummer, I was going to try to help, however, that's a very large file and even if I hosted it for you, it's simply too big to post for others to download.

You don't have any audio-only files of your playing?
