6505+ ?

Can the rhythm channel do thrash metal tones on this amp? I want to set it to a tight scooped testament type tone than set the lead channel for my warm solo tone with the mids up more, think this would work? Or would I be better off doing it the opposite, have the lead channel set to that testament tone and have the rhythm with more gain set to a solo tone?
 
The rhythm channel doesn't really get all that heavy without a boost pedal. What you could also do is use the lead channel for rhythms, then just use a boost for leads. I really don't think a 5150 is the best amp for thrash tones though. You'd be better off with some kind of boosted Marshall or something similar IMO.
 
Well with the band I'm in we play stuff with tones more along the lines of COB, LOG, Soilwork, Killswitch and the likes but our music is influenced by megadeth, maiden, queensryche and testament. So i need a tight responsive rhythm tone, but a warm lead tone. Right now I have a Mark III that someone wants trade me a 6505+ for. With the mark I can get either a great lead or rhythm not both in a live situation. I was hoping the 6505 could get me there. I'm thinkg keep the gain low on the lead channel with the mids scooped a little and boost it, then crank the gain on the rhythm with the mids up more and leave the boost on.
 
You cant get thrash tones out of the Mark III? :confused: Forget the 6505+, Trade me your Mark III for my 5150 :)

I said above I could get great tones from the Mark III just not a great lead and rhythm tone at the same time. I can either have a smooth wamr lead tone(which I want) but than my rhythm tone is a little to bassy or a tight crunchy borderline chuggy rhythm tone(also what I want) but then my leads are a little to thin. I want to beable to have both. I love my Mark III I just need it to have another channel with it's own EQ.
 
Ok I just listened to a clip of THE JEFF's 5150 III's crunch channel with a boost, if thats similar to the 6505's crunch with a boost than thats more than enough gain for my rhythm tone! I need to post in that thread that those clips sounded great. I'd just use the lead channel for leads.

So big question is... to those that listened to that clip is the 6505's rhythm(boosted) similar to that?
 
i can get thrash tones from the 5150, 5150II, mark III, mark IV, etc. etc...picky bastards. ;)

no but really in my band I would never use it, plus I hear the cleans on the the whole 5150 (-III) family aren't anything to write home about anyway.
 
If you want an amp with different EQs for each of the channels, then the 5150 isn't what you should be looking at.
 
6505 (+) are great amps for alot of things. and they can be modded in a plethera of different ways too. :thumbsup:
 
If you cant get any "thrash" tones out of the Mark III.......give up.

Wow this is the THIRD time I said it in this thread.... I get GREAT tones from my mark III, I'm super happy with its tone, not complaining about that AT ALL. I just want an amp with 2 channels WITH SEPERATE EQS capable of high gain with a boost. I want one channel for rhythm and one for lead, both high gain. It's really only for live purposes. I dont need a clean.

Again I LOVE THE TONE OF THE MARK III!!!11!! ITS THE BROTALZZ!!!11 I NEED AN AMP WITH 2 HIGH GAIN CHANNELS WITH SEPEREATE EQS THE MARK ONLY HAS ONE FOR LIVE PURPOSES. PLEASE I DON'T NEED ANYONE ELSE TELLING ME IF I CAN'T GET THRASH TONES WITH THE MARK THEN I DONT KNOW WHT IM DOING ETC..... I CAN GET GREAT THRASH TONES WITH IT.

I'm actually recording my band demo with it this sunday, I'll even put up clips.

Can we please just help me with my questions about the 6506+?

I've had both a 5150 and a Mark IV, and listen to similar stuff that you do, and with the footswitchable EQ on the Mark IV I can go from a thrashy rythym tone to a fat lead tone. I prefer the Mark voicing....so maybe I'm biased, but I would think that either with a boost or an extra eq pedal in the loop (like a Boss GE7) you'd be much better off than with a 6505+. They are nice amps, but the Mark series >>>> than a 6505 any day of the week, IMO of course. Just keep it in mind, thats all.

Also, remember that if you have two channels and end up boosting one for rythym (or lead), you need to hit two buttons to switch between your channels - one for the actual channel switch, and one for the boost. Just something to keep in mind if you are playing out.

Have you thought about buying a parametric EQ and using it in the loop for smoother lead tones? That's what I do.

Maybe I should go after a Mark IV eventually then, I kinda wanna stay away from another eq... theres enough things to tweak on these as there is :). Do you use R2 for your rhythm tone? R2 on the III seems kinda weak to me, maybe the IV improved it? I hear the IV does have more gain than the III...

About the boost... I'd just leave it on all the time, so I could still just hit one button to go rhythm to lead.

The only eq I've used is the boss graphic eq, and I wasn't crazy over it, mad the amp sound a little solid state like. I don't know much about parametric eq's though, I assume they are better.
 
I never liked the Boss EQs. The parametric EQ a lower-budget solution instead of swapping amps. If you want a completely different tone, it won't get you there. However, if you want to smooth out a tone, it should be able to help you. :)
