Some cheap little USB interface thing with a mic preamp and headphone monitoring, (there are a million of them, look at the big gear store sites, expect about $100) plus a suitable cheap mic (Sennheiser E609, Shure SM57, Audix i5...again, expect about $100).

Hmmm. Look in to an AudioBuddy by mAudio ($99?). It's a preamp that you plug your microphone (Shure sm57, $90)in to. You'll hook that in to your laptop's soundcard. Then you'll need some software. There are free solutions out there.

Maybe not the cheapest, but it'll be halfway decent.

The USB interfaces have gone down a lot lately, and you can get them for the same price as lots of the cheaper two channel mic preamps now.

+1

the line 6 toneport ux1 is a really good deal ($130 i think) for a cheap usb mic pre, you get some cool preamp models with eq's, cool fx, etc...in addition to all of that you can record direct guitar or bass tracks with it like a pod xt
