As some of you might already know, about 6 months ago I was asked to play in a coverband because the original guitarist left. I said yes and I learned 40 tunes in less then a month for the gig. With that said, the original guitar player asked to come back in the band and I got the shaft.

Now fast forward to today. I get a message on my answering machine from the singer of the band telling me that its not working out again with the old guitar player and he asked if would I be interested in the gig.

I'll let you guess what my answer is going to be :D

I'd tell them to fuck off

You guessed it. Im still kind of friends with the guys so my wording will be a bit different, but they have got a better chance of seeing Jesus then me doing the gig :D

Your answer will be:

"Yes but, you have to raise my pay by 33% or no dice."

;)

Nah go for 50% if the old guy is a big enough douche to work with then they may go for it. :D

If you like the material and it's not a pain in the ass to do the gig, I think you should consider it. However, it's essential to raise your price accordingly and ask to be paid for rehearsals as well.

What else are you doing? If you 'aint giggin', swallow yer pride and go play some gigs. you know you are better. After a couple gigs, they'll know too. Then quit on them...

Do you like the music? If so, I'd tell them that due to their past record, you'll need to think about it for a while. Let them sweat a little, then do it, but on your terms etc.

Tell them if they fuck wiht you this time, they're going to pay for it. It's tough, I know exactly how you feel. You love what they're doing, but you're not getting the star treatment. I think you're good to go this time though. Either that, or tell them to fuck off. But since you're still friends with them, I'd give them a chance. But that's me. Bands are so rare that are talented by me.

+1

Don't let your pride get in the way of going out and having fun and making some money....unless you think it's a trap. ;)

My opinion...i do repespect Carl's as well but...
committ to learinng about 6 tunes that are diverse to your satisfaction and do an audition/reherearsal to feel out the band chemistry. who gives a fuck about past drama, if it's something that will fulfill your needs and the situation within the band members is cool, then go for it if u r in to it. You are a great guitarist ,so don't rest on your laurels and plug in and play with your dick out so to speak!

you never know...

I remember when you first posted about this situation, so I'm going to say that you will turn them down and tell them they had their chance and can fuck off :)

Not to mention they wasted your time learning all those songs, totally unacceptable

Il be honest bro i agree with Drew in some ways.. but i mean that basically if you enjoy the songs, then go out and have some fun doing a few gigs. At the end of the day, you could always do a couple and if you arent feeling it you could just walk away?

I completely understand if you tell them no way, but i think you could use the situation to your own advantage to make a little cash and play some gigs if you wanted to!
Also i would suggest that due to how much you learned in so little time, and the work you put into learning the songs in that short time, that they should up your pay atleast. All IMHO though, just decide what will make ya happier bro :)

tell em they had their chance, you pulled your weight, and they were a no-go

were they atleast apologetic/respectful with you when all that happened before, or did they just blow you off? that MIGHT make me reconsider, but not too likely

I don't know the details of the situation...

But this kind of thing happens in coverbands all the time. Hell, around here, there are working bands that swap members like pulling the string on a see-n-say! :D

If their move was just business, and not personal in some way... and you are itching to get out and play... do it! And you know as well as anyone, that there's no better way to get your name out to other players and meet other potential bandmates, than to be onstage.

Howdy Gents!! Thanks for the Ideas and Comments!!

Now here is the deal. I should have given you guys a bit more info. I don't really enjoy playing covers that much. It's fun to get out there and play but I’m not the type of guy who has to play out all the time. I have friends who go stir crazy if they don’t play but I’m lazy, so I could care less lol :D These guys are great at what they do and I would be playing every weekend and although my girlfriend says that she is cool with It, I’m sure her tune would change after a while and I don't need the added drama lol :D

To add insult to injury and to also give you a bit more insight, No one in the band ever apologized about how they handled the situation. They were up my ass to learn the set and they kept in touch with me and gave me a lot of cool pep talks to get ready for the band and then I heard nothing!!. It didn’t take a rocket scientist to know that something was up when the calls stopped lol :D. I knew something was wrong but I played dumb and I kept calling the guys to see when they wanted to do a test rehearsal and they were still blowing me off.
No one ever called me to officially let me know that there old guitar player wanted back in the band. The let me know that the other guy came back by E-mail because they were to chicken shit to pick up the phone. Even after all of that crap I am still friends with the guys but had they handled the situation better, I would not be posting this !!!!

I’m done with the cover band thing.

Thanks again everyone!
