well, I've been on the flip side of this situation being on the band end of it. only differences were -
A) we were and all original band
B) it was our singer, not the guitarist
I don't recall the details of your situation. our singer quit, we waited it out for a bit, then auditioned singers for a few months. finally we found a guy, but he was a pretty different style singer. so we told him we would start playing with him on vocals, but would likely do mostly new songs since his voice was so much different. everyone was cool with that.
a week and a half later, we get a call from our old singer saying he f'd up and wanted back in. we were all very tight as friends and loved the music. so after a week or so of talking shit out, we went back with the original singer. I had to call the new guy up(who I've known for a long time) and give him the bad news. he was cool about it though. it only lasted about a year, but we wrote a bunch of songs and played alot of cool shows. I still wouldn't change my decision now, even knowing the outcome.
sometimes as a business situation or one between friends, ya gotta do shit you don't want to do. sometimes you do what you feel is the smartest - even if it means being kinda shitty to someone. granted our new guy had little time or work involved at that point so its a little different.
