So what does gain or no gain have to do with anything? What can be judged by someone playing over something that theyre not into or not comfortable with? It's fairly simple, improving doesn't come with work and some selfd assessment.
There's always a time and place for ripping shit. But when we're talking about improving as a player that's really not so important.

A few things...
I listened to the takes and will toss my opinion out there. BUT, that really doesn't matter. The idea is that you guys get over the hurdle of having to be "great" and just throw down anything any time. And then go back a pick through it to see what you dig. And then work with that. And what you don't dig and either fix it or toss it out.

I like how you come in, works well with the backing. Before the part you dislike it gets a bit meandering for me. Tyhen the part where you don't like the pocket I actually think is rather hip. But then I do like weirdness in music.
After that, you hitting it but it seems that you're not sure on the end of the phrases about where you land.
Bottomline, there are no bad notes only bad resolutions. So hit it and mean it. If you're off you're usually only a half step from a good note. Slide it in!

The intro was a bit timid, as in you didn't know where you where going. The arpeggios didn't do much for me becuase of each one's last note. A whammy bar woulda been great there.
The first half of the hammer-on part was glorious, the second woulda been cool in time. The lines after that are hip, but don't resolve well.
My 2 cents...work those hammer-ons, record a couple of loops...a minor, a dominant and a major vamp. And practice the hammer-ons. (record it to judge your progress). Learn how to change the lines notes to make it work for the different vamps.
Do the same with the arpeggios, but not so much to get the chops up but to listen to the notes/chord relation ships.

You're coming super strong, the melodic and rhythmic concept is SHawn lane. Amazing.
The first half is great, then you start to meander. The you're back on the horse, and then you meander again. If you woulda thrown say some pentatonic licks in 5 where from o:35 to 0:50 and from 1;05 on out you'd have killed that shit.
Thius is where knowing some stock licks would come in handy. You have Sheets Of Sound right?
Grab some of the pentatonic lines in there and overdub on those sections and listen back to it.

Thanks Ed for taking the time to analize it. Of course it was timid, I was naked with no gain, verb, delay, and was WAY out in the deep end with no float 
If I had used gain and sauce I would have been holding notes with wide vibrato and using more trills.

Thanks for taking the time to 'analyse' our stuff and thanks for the nice comments, took me by surprise.
I am re-thinking my 'practising' time because of this thread and because I see 3 things that I need to work on:
-Licks library: transcribing stuff, I love a lot of different players so I should just work out some of their music
-Really practising more, SOS is a good start but I seem to be able to take things better if I can SEE someone playing it so I will work with instructional DVDs (bough the one from Garsed, great stuff)
-When jamming to backings, recording more. Most of the time, when jamming I use my setup and sometimes I get lost into corksniffing territory, A/B-ing pedals, toying with FX etc etc. All fun stuff but I have the toneport ready to roll so I should devide jamming time between the rig/tweaking/sniffing and toneport/recording my jams.

Your right, I do need to have a strict 15-20 minute warm up time and then start drilling on new material instead of rehashing old licks that I already have done. My library is pretty freaking empty.

That said this is the D60 on the less mode with gain 1 at noon, and gain 2 at 1 o'clock. I wouldn't call that gain.

LOL, unbelievable. I posted this backing and 'challenge' at 2 different forums, one Dutch, one Belgian.
On the Belgian forum I´ve had a couple of guys who are interested but also comments like "what kinda porn-music is that" and "as a metal-player, I cannot use this backing".
On the Dutch forum I had 2 guys posting tracks pretty soon after I posted the challenge and a bit later a 3rd one. Now this 3rd guy is arguing with me about the goal of my post, the added value for the listener, it´s not representative for the player etc. I basically copied Ed and told him to look into his track for what he does not like and practise it AND look into the other tracks and 'steal' the licks they like. But he says it´s useless because if it sounds good, you were lucky, if not you might have been unlucky blah blah.
Give them something to play with and they will try to hit you with it.
