I'm getting more into live albums recently, however, I hate when a "live" album is labeled as such but you can tell there is way too much post production to the point that it is no longer "live". I don't even like fake crowd noise. I recently heard the live Def Leppard album "Mirror Ball" and though it was really good. Guitars were mixed very hot, tone was great, and a lot of improvised parts can be heard. Vocals were touched up a lot however but that doesn't bother me as much. What other live guitar oriented albums should I look into?

Cool, thanks! I like it all! I thought the live BlackBerry Smoke CD/DVD was great also.

I cringe whenever I hear fake crowd noise.

Honestly only ones you are gonna find are live albums recorded between the 50s and early 80s. After that KISS definied the way a Live Album should sound and everyone started fixing shit after the fact :(

Not sure how much touch up was done on Peter Frampton Comes Alive - I know there was some. I really dig his guitar tone though.

Pantera - Official: Live 101

If they DID fix anything on that album, I'd be pretty surprised. I still haven't heard Dimebag make a single mistake in all the stuff I've dug up over the years and it's not like Phil's vocals were.....Phil's vocals.

Also Pink Floyd's Pulse. It's been edited to fuck an back, some solo's are from different nights or they've been chopped up a bit. I don't think they would have done much in the studio after the fact, as they had so many shows to choose from. Funnily enough, that version of "Comfortably Numb" is my favorite of all time. You can find the original Pay-Per-View broadcast of the live video in it's un-edited form on the YouTubes, so you can hear exactly what they edited after the fact, it was pretty much just shortening Gilmour's solos.

Children of Bodom's live album has no over-dubs and sounds great.

ozzy/randy rhoads tribute jumps out for me

yes Ozzy redid all the vocals but in terms of randy's guitars all they did was fix a mistake in crazy train and sped up the spotlight solo. For me that has always been some of the most "alive" guitar playing ever. It helps that randy plays a little ahead of the beat and that his guitar is way loud in the mix

+1 for Randy/Ozzy Tribute. I also used to listen to Speak of the Devil with Brad Gillis a LOT when I was learning how to play.

Thanks for this. I’m going to check it out.

It's not live as we think of it, but it's very much a raw, organic-sounding, rough-but-polished album that one gets the feeling was recorded mostly-live, and it's...

Women and Children First.

It's like a live album that fits your specified requirements, nevusofota, but without the crowd noise.

LOVE Live After Death!! One of my favorite live albums, ever. I always thought it was more than a little retouched after the fact, though. Still love it, anyway. Maiden Japan. Or, Priest's Unleashed in the East... Black Sabbath's Live Evil... and of course, World Wide Live from Scorpions. Kiss Alive, for that matter. I grew up on all of these, great great records. And I'll admit that I don't know for sure, but I've always thought they sounded a little too polished for truly live albums. I think Ozzy's Live and Loud really captured the late-80s, early-90s vibe, what is was like when dinosaurs walked the earth, lighting rigs always caught fire, and guitars ruled the world. I'm quite convinced that *that* one was quite produced in post, still enjoy it, though, if for no other reason than the energy (and the great memories).

I’ve been re-visiting a Fu Manchu live album “Go For It” lately and it’s the bomb. If it’s touched up, I couldn’t tell you but it rocks hard.

Man I think its pretty much as it was to tape. Well it sounds pretty raw to me. I actually sat down and listened to it a few weeks ago and man you can hear how fucked Bruces voice is but that stage of the tour. He is pretty rough

Bad Brains, The Youth Are Getting Restless. It’s a shame they probably didn’t touch it up because the snare sounds like a cardboard box! Everything else sounds amazing.

The Live Albums of Between The Buried And Me are pretty awesome, I think. Musicianship from another galaxy, though. They manage to sound as tight live as they do on their regular albums.
