Yep, and the above comment "he has a transformer made specifically for that", he also talks about running a SuperLead combo down into the 58-ish volt range, basically until right before it stops working. Dave didn't discourage him, and regularly mentions that it is worthwhile to play around with impedance mismatching (one step away).

I'm not worried about any of it. Its all just stuff.
 
that sounds great! Wonder if Roy Blankenship could do the same thing with JCM 800 circuit that he did with the Variplex amp… hmmm…

To be fair, the guy in the clip i posted also has a gain stage added to his 800.. but no question variac can work on an 800.
