Best high gain pedal for playing/recording direct?

For those of you who are not using amp modelling for recording direct.. What high gain preamp pedals are you using for direct recording?

Thinking of picking up something in pedal form that i can plug straight into my interface and record with. I already have the entire collection of RedWirez Speaker/Cabinet Impulse plugins, so i can use those for cab sims.

Wondering if something like the Carl Martin Plexitone would be any good? I know some guys rave about the AMT pedals too, but i have no experience with those...

Hi Dan,

why not simply interrupt your modded Marshalls pre-pwr amp chain and hook this "send" to your 'puter with red wirez and some ambience verb added (if you shouldn't have a loop). Just put the pwr amp in to ground for silent recording . . .

Pedalwise I just tried the Bad Monkey's rec out (already frequ. corrected), which was - well - ok. I had good results with preamps and cab sims.

Just some ideas . . .

Hey Olaf!

I already do that with my amps and it works great! But this time I'm looking for something portable for when I don't have my amps with me :)

Perhaps look into Mesa Boogie V-twin or Blackstar HT ? These have recording ouputs, but I do not have recording experience with them.

Well, Although it's not a pedal the Randall RD1 would be pretty cool IMO. I have the RD5 and the XLR out works really well for silent recording. The RD1 is even a little smaller too. You still have a small watt amp to mic up if you want, or connect the send to a power amp and it freakin roars. Just a thought.

I've never played the SansAmp guitar stuff, but the bass stuff is fantastic for direct recording or as a pedal. I use a Tech 21 VT bass pedal direct into my interface for bass tracks.

The Backstar pedals are really good. They sound very organic and have a wide tonal palette, and the recording out is pretty convincing. Cant go wrong....

Cheers for the suggestions guys, will look into all these options!

DI'ing the guitars and re-amping into my amps isn't a bad idea either, will definitely do that

Dan, you should build a little recording preamp.

Eastern block guys were going crazy building them for awhile, and think there's a UK guy that's building crazy good stuff.

Resurrecting this ancient thread. What's your favorite answer here in 2024?

Context:
I had a kid in September and need DI to record at night. Will apply Atlas IRs in the DAW. I was using a Syn-1 with UL module, but that blew up and is in the shop. Will likely go back to that when it returns.

In the meantime, I tried Amptweaker's Fat Metal Pro (the "new owner" version), but can't get anything I really love out of it. Top is fizzy in a way I can't overcome and it really loses articulation at medium gain. Six string, Eb standard tuning with the sixth string at Bb.

Anything out there under $1K you guys recommend? Not trying to go full QuadCortex or anything... yet 🙃
