Toto "Little Wing" Steve Lukather on Jeff Beck's Strat at the Hollywood Bowl! 09/01/24

Good morning Johnny. Hope you are well brother. If I never heard Little Wing again that's fine. I grew to hate that song, don't care who is playing it. I was playing this Indian cop wedding at a Holiday Inn in the late 90's and they wanted little wing for the dollar dance. I got stuck playing that song for half an hour straight. Finally I get done and needed to use the can The cop-groom was in there. He was so drunk when I opened the bathroom door open it messed with his sense of balance and he fell down. I think he was divorced a few years later but it never did me wrong playing Hendrix for a Native American crowd. They love that stuff.

The other song I hate on the same level is Cissy Strut. What is amazing to me is these songs have basically replaced Mustang Sally down at your local blues jam, another song I have hated. I always leave the stage and shoot a couple dirty looks if people call for either of those songs.

A few days ago my wife started singing Proud Mary. Out of the blue. I told her she was forbidden from ever singing that song because I had to play it in shitkicker bars a million times. We both got a good laugh about that. Mustang Sally...hell no. What a stupid fucking song.

BUT... Luke played his ASS off on the song and on Jeff Beck's Strat. I dig it. :-)

I love the Wilson Pickett version, it's badass. It's everyone's cover of it that sucks, lol.

People always do that retarded turn around that Wilson never did in the song, and then look at you like you don't know the song when you don't hit the hits on their self-invented turnaround.

Thought it was a Jimi reissue when I watched the video?

Not up on all the Fenders though...
 
Luke is great with Toto. But there is a big difference between jamming on the song versus embodying the original performance in the truest essence of the player and tone.

Ya, he had one on his last tour. Used it a good bit of the night when I saw him.
