Second External Speaker Jack?

Howdy All,

I have a Ceriatone Yeti that has two external speaker jacks. I have a 4x12 plugged into one and don't use the second. However, I have been reading about Scott Henderson using the second jack with a Line Out Box, and doesn't seem to have a cab plugged into it (see pic).

My question is, if I have a 4x12 plugged into the amp's first speaker jack, can I run a speaker cable to a line out box on the second with no cab connected?

I think whoever drew that diagram got it wrong. From what I've read and seen with my own eyes at a couple shows, the Suhr Iso box goes between the Marshall head and the 4x12. Then the line out from that box feeds the the HRD chain.

My understanding of the above, and from seeing other line out circuits, is that yes, you don't need to have a speaker cabinet plugged into the line out box so long as there is still a cabinet plugged into one of the other speaker jacks on the amp. If the only thing hooked up to the amp is the line-out box with no speaker attached to it, that's when you get screwed.

Understood, this seems odd, but got curious when I saw it again in this Suhr vid (2:20):

He clearly has no cab plugged in to the Suhr ISO Box... surely I am misunderstanding something somewhere?

Cool, this is what I was looking for, I'll give it a shot.

The speaker outputs are in parallel, so you're fine using the second speaker output rather than putting it in-line. It's effectively the same thing.

(I do the same thing with an IR loader I use at gigs.)

Awesome, it seems to work... might not make a difference in the big picture, but its nice to know my one good speaker cable is direct to the cab, and the ISO Box is out of the chain.

I appreciate the info, guys, this makes my day.

One more question, does this change the Impedance values like running two parallel cabs? The amp is set to 16ohms and the cab is rated as 16 ohms as well. Do I need to make changes?

You're asking if the iso box will change the impedance, right? If that's correct: No, it won't. Technically, yes, but not anywhere near enough to matter. Rough calculation for when you're hooked up to a 16ohm cab is that with the iso box connected it actual nominal impedance will be about 15.999744 Ohms. Assuming the iso box uses a 1 Mega Ohm resistor pot. Basically, if it's a well-designed iso box, you don't need to worry about the impedance changing.

That’s exactly how I do it except the cab is a load box. So there’s one speaker cable to the load and a second one to the Suhr ISO Line Out.
