EVH ECC83 preamp tubes?

They'll wake up a blue channel, just play with the treble and presence.. That brightness and tighter bottom end works well with those amps. Best thing he could do is clip that C137. The EL34 50 watt is my least favorite EVH. The red channel does what the red channel does, but the blue channel stock sounded awful to me. I think that amp was an experiment gone bad. The 100 watt is totally different, and lightyears better
I think the C137 mod will do a whole lot more for changing the tone than changing tubes.

Tubes swaps for me are fun, but they're more a matter of swaying an amp that you love towards a position that you love more than fixing an amp that you don't.

For those that knock down the JJ ECC83s because they sound muddy, look at the JJ E83CC. If you like the Tung-sol 12ax7s, you might be surprised with the JJE83CC. I think those are comparable in brightness and gain with less harsh highs than the Tung-sol. Plus they have a lower noise floor.

I've been real curious about these tubes since Ground Zero recommended them after they first came out. I like the older run of the Tung Sol's so I think I may grab a couple of these JJ-E83CC's to compare.:2thumbsup:

They are really hard and stiff sounding IMO. Might be great if you are going for modern chug, but I didn’t care for them at all.

I tried them in all positions. For the 78’ I like EH7025 in V1 and PI. I have a gold pin JJ83s in V2.
I've heard good things about the EH7025 as well and are also on my interest list.

I am running a 2009ish production New Sensor Tung Sol that I really like and I'm not convinced the newish 2022 production Tung Sols I recently got sound/feel the same so I am looking for something similar. The 2009 ish Tung Sol's are well balanced, nice high end detail without being too bright, take gain well and are quiet with no microphonics.

When I rolled NOS tubes(EI, Tung Sol, Mullard, Sylvania, RCA, GE, RFT long and shortplates) against a a few of the modern production tubes in my 69 NOS build Marshall SL amp for V1... surprisingly the 2009 Tung Sol I had laying around sounded pretty close to the NOS Sylvania 12ax7A's in V1 without the plate ring the sylvania's can get.

surprised ? Really ?
Actually, yes. 4 tubes is too many to go bad in a new amp. This MT100 is basically new.
Someone bought it new from GC, played it with 4 microphonic tubes, didn't like it, and returned it.
GC listed it used at $400 less, and I grabbed it. Tested the tubes, replaced them all. Amp is killer.

My other amps I bought new that have JJ preamp tubes, all tested good.

Something about the particular batch that PRS bought probably.
I've noticed other folks being underwhelmed by the MT100.
Probably a microphonic tube or two on board.

Do you find their reviews/comparisons reliable?

Not OP, but was thinking of upgrading all my amps with better preamp tubes.
