Korea redeemed? Quite possibly! But Seymour Duncan - shamefur dispray!

I recently bought a korean LTD Baritone from Sweetwater that was god awful and should not have made it out of the factory, arguably not even to B stock. I returned it and decided, despite really not wanting a 7 string, to give the Jackson Loomis sig a try. Also a korean made guitar, the one I have received is however light years better in terms of finish, build, and playability than the LTD had been. I really dig the blacked out finish and sandblasted ash top too.

However, as seems to be the case with many things these days, there's got to be a catch. This time though the Koreans are innocent, and instead I cast my ire towards Seymour Duncan. In the past I never liked the Blackout actives but these Loomis sig ones sound a lot better to me. However there seems to be a problem with the bridge pickup - it squeals uncontrollably and constantly with feedback. I recalled years ago when the blackouts first came out that a number of people had this problem with them and it was due to the pickup vibrating in its cover. Some had success dampening the vibrations using foam underneath it - but there's already foam underneath these.

I intend to keep the guitar since it plays so well and everything, but I guess I'm going to have to hit up my sales guy yet again and see what we can do about the pickup - it is totally unusable like this. I might prefer to swap in EMG's ultimately anyway, but goddamn I'd at least like to get what I paid for.

The 1500 series Floyd isn't too bad, but I haven't used a floyd trem in a long ass time. I have had a Vega Trem on one of my guitars since last year and while it has it's drawbacks too, it feels way smoother to use than this Floyd. It's also machined better and you can feel it in every single little screw on it you have to adjust. If this guitar works out for me in the long term I may have to look into replacing the trem with an OG Floyd.

Well, after talking to Sweetwater there's nothing they can do except have me send the guitar back to them to figure out what's wrong, which seems pretty wacky to me but it is what it is. There is obviously nothing to be done but replace the pickup, which a monkey could do since these are quick connect but apparently if they send me a pickup and I replace it, it will "void the warranty." Still surprised to have a defective Seymour Duncan as the weak link here - everything is going to shit these days!

Just put an 81-7 in the bridge and a 707 in the neck. This will likely solve the problem. As much as I like Duncan's, I can't stand any of their active pickups. EMG's always win for actives!

Even if I do that, I don’t want to have paid for something I didn’t get - in this case a functioning bridge pickup that retails for $160. If they would have just given me a partial refund of that amount I would have been fine to take it from there.

I’m actually kind of surprised though that I think I like the Loomis bridge. I’ve always thought the blackouts suck. Comparing it to my other guitars with EMG’s though (a couple with 81/60 and a baritone with the 57/66) the EMG’s all sound clearer and more detailed. The Duncan has more broad mids, more output, and sounds more chunky and aggressive.

The duncan neck pickup is very trebly and I’m not sure I like it.

What was wrong with the LTD?
Some finishing defects that alone should have at least got it sent to B stock but it also had poorly done frets (at least 5 out of level frets, so needed a total relevel and crown) and maybe something else was wrong with the neck. It buzzed and rattled everywhere, not just around the high frets, no matter how high I set the action or added relief.

Looks rad af kimg
These are cool looking as shit IMO; I also like the Kelly version. It came with those really light 9-54 strings but I guess the longer scale length (only 26.5' though) and the Floyd add enough tension as it feels pretty good. On the other hand I have a 27.7" baritone 6 string that I have to put a lot heavier strings on for it to feel right.

Looks badass, once you get that pickup situation cleared up I bet it's gonna slay
