Why i stopped using IR to record.

IR have a something that once you've heard you cant unhear it.. it call it the ear stuck to the speaker tone.. it lacks "space" or something. its hard to describe but make it annoying once your brain learned it.

and worse, everybody use the same irs, since speaker and cab is maybe 80-90% of the tone, everything sound almost exactly the same.. so boring.

There is this as well... you sound like everyone else. I have made me own impulses and enjoyed them but back to back if I compare, the IR sounds really good and " almost" there but the minute i hear the real one, that's the one I want the IR to sound like.

I wind up using both, there are loads of shitty IRs out there, but with good ones I honestly can’t really tell. If I do mic it’s with me either sitting right next to it with monitoring off; or into my interface, then reamp and leave the room.

No one can tell, but people are gonna think what they wanna think 😂.

On that note, micing up an amp is fun as hell, atleast when you learn how to properly do it. Sounds like you figured out the biggest errors you can make, and are avoiding them. That’s how you learn and grow. Good job man

True that!

I really need to make IRs of my Albion cab. Thing is sick. I bought it after watching an Ulrich Wild video about his. Saw one at guitar center for 300 bucks and couldn’t resist.

I just want to play guitar not mess with computer stuff. Did you ever do the reveal on your other thread whether it was IRs or real speakers?

These days, I record all guitar tracks DI signal into ReaperDAW, then run the signal back out into whatever gear I wanna a try to get a specific tone/sound.

That track was my SLO preamp into JCM800 power section, via passive loop.

The only speaker I prefer to record with is a Scumback BM-75, and I'll mic with an SM-57 and sometimes blend in an AKG-220.
What are you using for re-amping?

this is where is basically said "screw that", the whole impedence load thing where you need a bunch of expensive specialized tool to emulate something to a certain degree of realism thats basically is there next right to me

What are you using for re-amping?
I have a variety of pre-amps that I've bought, or built.. SLO-100, Fortin-modded JMP-1, Teh SNorkler, 1964 Fender Princeton modded with line out, etc.. I have a Ceriatone AH-50 that I built, as well.

I run them thru the power section of my JCM-800 via passive loop.

I meant want re-amp box or device do you use to get the signal from the interface output back out to the amp/pre-amp?

I got a Canvas passive re-amp on a flash sale last summer for $99

the simplest and easiest way i found to reamp is this.. all bundle in one neat package easy to use.

"No one can tell, but people are gonna think what they wanna think" - Such a true statement. Agree 100%

I get it, I really do. But, as the days go by, it’s only getting easier and less time is needed “fiddling”
With shit on a computer to get a great sound. It’s definitely easier than it ever has been, that’s for sure.

hard agree

i don't think the big issue with IRs is sound quality - it's more like having it be so easy makes people lazy and uncreative. That's why agufish, glenn fricker, frogleap, fluff, and every other "metal" youtuber sounds exactly the fucking same :dunno:

I find use for both IRs and micing up cabs though. IRs are great for when i need a sound that would be difficult to get with my mics and cabs, but most of the time i'm just using them to record without pissing my girlfriend or the neighbors off.

Exactly the same. I use both IRs and IRL (in real life) mics for different use cases. Getting awesome results with both.

Whether it's using the 121 and/or 57 or the reactive load signal with an IR, getting it into a nice mic pre is an important step in the process.

anybody mic'ing a cab in another room need to check out that robot boom stand that adjusts through an app on your phone. Thing isunbelievable!

That being said, I stopped micing years ago and went to TNL

Man I’ll never use anything but IRs lol.

I made this clip to compare pickups for someone, it was just my amp —> captor X —> iPhone and I think it sounds pretty good even without being punched up by a daw

The craziest thing is, even alot of relatively cheap interfaces have decent mic preamps now

Obviously they aren't on the level of professional outboard gear, but compared to what mic pres on interfaces were like 10-15 years ago it's insane.

Even a relatively cheap interface nowadays plus some decent plugins is slowly closing the gap with the good shit, although I can definitely tell the difference still.

Most of the time the real difference in recorded sounds is in the knowledge and experience of the person recording and the quality of the performance 🤷

If you have those things down, you can turn lead into gold for freaking FREE these days.
