Did you buy this in a private sale or a dealer? Either way unless you really like the guitar it should not look like that being a 2023 with fret dressing file gouges on both sides of the frets.

It was a private sale off Reverb. I’m gonna ask for a refund because it was listed as in excellent condition. Will go from there.

To the OP: for me part of those finishing/built issues look similar to what I’ve seen from Gibson, too often, throughout the years…




^This. Gibsons are try before You buy guitars for me these days, unfortunately. The finishing quality in paint/binding/frets/nut/fretboard etc can be anything from disgustin to perfect. On the other hand I bought a new Fender YJM Strat with a rosewood fretboard new a few months ago and I had to return it due to incredibly bad issues with fretboard. What has happened to the big companies?

This is the most common Gibson quality I see these days. I cannot f**king understand why they can ruin the nut/fretboard end joint so that chips are missing from both on so many guitars.

Many Gibson models were sold out from Europe for a long time during covid and I started gassing for a black LP Classic. Finally when a big european retailer got them in stock I ordered one. I returned it due to finishing issues and tool marks… Such a shame distributors and/or shops are not inspecting them properly when they get a shipment from Gibson. If all the shops/distributors sent the shitty ones back then Gibson would be interested in their quality control?

I bought an Explorer in 2016 or so and there was a big chunk of fretboard missing from that very same area so it isn’t limited to the usual binding damage in that area. Returned it to my local shop and the replacement is one of the best guitars I have.

This! When you find a good Gibson, it's one of the best guitars.
I have a 2016 Explorer, too! I wasn't even shopping for a guitar. I took an Ibanez Prestige to GC to try out an amp or cab. Didn't like it. Made a quick pass thru before I left, saw the Explorer. Had never played one, so tried it out. Traded the Ibanez on the spot. That Explorer plays so good.
What pickups in your?
I just looked, all of my 5 Gibbys have a regular nut. None of that shimming, hack job repair stuff going on, I wonder if this is their answer when they mess up the nut, or nut slot.

I have the stock pickups in all of my Gibsons. I’ve only changed the tune-o-matics, tuners, screws and pup switches and strap buttons (locking) to black ones on Explorer and Flying V. LP Custom is stock except for removed pickguard.

I'd like to black mine out. Get rid of the white pickguard, anyway.
Changing the pups brought that guitar to life, but I don't dig the 496r/500t.
I remove the pickguard on my LPs too. Left it on the 335. I want a V. Someday!

Actually I’ve kept the white pickguards on Explorer and Flying V. Looks killer when everything else is blacked out, including the pickguard screws!

I haven't played a new Gibson in years that I felt warranted the price. The term "lifestyle brand" rings true now more than ever. I can't live in $6000 custom shop land. Hell, I have played some impressive Epiphone models recently.

There are lots of used Customs in excellent to mint condition between $3200-$4200. There's no reason to buy new.

That looks like finish checking to me. As far as I know it's very common on most of the guitars coming out of Gibson.

I guess you haven't played any vintage Marshalls then.

This is probably the dumbest 'read it on the internet and re post' statement I've seen on any forum. I've had 60+ pre 1990 Marshalls, and the only one that didn't sound very good had leaky can caps, and the tubes were biased at 15ma. 60$ and an hours worth of my time later, it was a killer 83 2203 that sounded better than the 2010 Wizard I had...so I sold the Wizard.
