I didn't want to be the flashy lead player.

I'd rather listen to hair metal than math rock 🤷
I did some prog metal, thrash metal and black metal back in the day; but hair metal was more fun and less effort.

here's a pic of me back in the day, around 1994, playing bass in a black metal band (my last band; photo shoot. I'm 6'5", 195 or so pounds, 30" waist, and still fit. lol. IIRC I had a haircut shortly before this pic, because it was nearly down to my waist - like cousin it from the Addams family.

I don't have many pics because they were usually film cameras and I lost most all of them in basement floods over the years.

for the hair metal bands I'd shave my face, and wear brighter colors; and maybe some spandex. thankfully, no known pics survive :D

edit; fixed typo in my weight. I remember the 30" waist because I kept these pants for many years trying to get them to fit again!

Absolutely taking this post to the bushes

Nothing wrong with playing flashy IF you can do it. Hell, I've posted up some ridiculous wankage clips on here just cause I happen to like the tone/sound that I had and this is a guitar/rig forum. LOL I would much rather play solos that fit within the context of song that actually add to it rather than just fill up time. I'm old school so my opinion might be outdated but your average non player usually remembers a basic solo they can hum or sing over a wank fest. Ace's live solo spotlight moment is when he did his FI-GA-RO for like 3 minutes. LOL

I listen to a lot of my earlier stuff and when the solos come on I cringe cause its cringe worthy! LOL Says nothing and is just flash. Thats ok sometimes but thankfully over time my chops got better and my outlook on doing leads got better as well.

that's great...and singers usually got more than anyone else in the band...at least back in my day.

though having the right look helped too.

I got more action in the clubs playing bass than many of the lead guitarists in a few of my bands; but singing and playing rhythm worked even better for me.

I remember more than a few lead guitarists being surrounded by dudes asking about their gear while singers were surrounded by women...not just in my bands.

maybe things are different in your day vs mine?
Maybe I’m just too sexy lol jk . But things kinda of are different atm . Chicks love polyphia . And rock is also dying so it makes everything strange atm . It’s sad seeing this because I love all rock .

99% of guitar solos are boring horseshit. 1% of them are awesome, melodic, memorable, etc. Actually, maybe not even 1%.
Far less than 1% imo. Most of them are either the musical afterthought part of the song or an attempt to just try to show their chops without much musical or compositional consideration. Seems like it got that much after EVH and Yngwie's influences of flash without the class behind the musical ideas. RR and Marty didn't seem to be enough to offset that trend

nah, rather be "wrassling" with the ladies after the shows.

I did moonlight as a driver for strippers as a side hustle, got to know many, and they'd often come to our hair metal shows with their friends...made for some interesting nights.

I

I shed like a motherfucker and it gets me pussy so I must girls like it a lot. What I find is shred is like math . Math is amazing . But it you don’t like math it’s not for you I get it . Shred can be very hard to follow fir many .
You got to shred with real emotion to make it work . Some guys who shred can’t do that and it ruins it for the great ones
Yeah, totally! Me too!

No really guys, girls throw themselves at me whenever I start alternate picking and getting super technical.

The hair metal and stripper correlation should be studied. Now that seemed to be an actual genre that attracted hot women. Not shred.

exactly.

as I said, I enjoyed playing prog, thrash and death metal, but hair metal was easier, more fun, paid more, more shows, bigger clubs, and more women. no contest.

edit: hair metal pic of me, sometime in the late '80s maybe?

I was only a kid in that era, but it was the best. To this day I’m still huge into a lot of “hair” style music. Or even just good rock and metal from guys with a lot of hair. lol.

The sad irony being I started losing mine in my early 20s. So I feel a bit on the outskirts. Strangely another favourite of mine is 50s/60s greaser stuff and 70s hippy stuff. All have lots of hair. But people look at me and assume “metal” lol. Luckily I love metal too.

That said, back on topic: I practise shredding to backing tracks on YouTube all the time. If anything shows you how the backing rhythm is what actually determines how cool the “solo” sounds, it’s that. I can try as hard as I might, nothing sounds fun or is inspiring over a vanilla rhythm section.

I tell you what seems under mentioned from that era, the availablity of leather jackets. Seemed they were in abundance. I’d have to go looking with serious intention to find one these days.

there was a leather coat store chain in most malls, then the motorcycle shops. I had one because I rode a Harley, and it got cold there.

It's interesting to see guys beat up on soloists in a musical form where the majority of the rhythm work consists mainly of root-fifth power chords. *shrugs
